The journey of women in sports has always been about more than just the game. From the passage of Title IX to the relentless activism seen in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), women's sports are a powerful agent for change. 🟢 Role Models in Action: The WNBA stands out not just for athletic excellence, but for its unwavering commitment to social justice. These incredible athletes, many of whom are Black and queer, use their platforms to advocate for equality, showing young girls that they, too, can be champions for change. 🔴 Breaking Barriers: WNBA players have led the way in activism, from protesting police violence to supporting voting rights. Their courage to speak out, even at personal risk, teaches young girls the importance of standing up for what’s right. 🔵 Creating a Legacy: By integrating activism into their brand, the WNBA is creating a future where sports and social justice go hand in hand. The league’s actions have boosted visibility and support, and also shown the power of unity and community. 🟡 Inspiring the Future: When young girls see WNBA players fighting for justice and achieving success, they learn that they can pursue their passions while making a difference. Megan Leonard (she/her) has been a part of the GTBG community for a while, and you may have witnessed her community energy and contributions in previous campaigns such as UNDIVIDED, Black Women Matter, or our TogetherForWomen event. These campaigns were so successful, they are now a permanent and signature feature in our advocacy work. As a volunteer and supporter, Megan stands with us, striving to build power and amplify support for women and gender-diverse folks at the margins, grappling with discrimination, disenfranchisement, and the erosion of basic human rights. She strongly advocates for solutions only the community holds that center the voices of those most affected, with the least power. Megan has ignited collective action for GTBG and many other organizations by using her artwork and personal networks, amplifying petitions and deep-seated policy issues on social media, building relationships with neighbours, employing deep listening, and allocating resources to meet shared needs and improve real, lived outcomes in women's lives. At a time when community investment and women’s leadership are sorely needed, this is no small achievement. She understands that collective power comes from everyday people—like you and us—who build common belief in a just, gender-equal, hopeful future for all. Our sister, friend and Three Hijabis Co-Director Huda Jawad has been named an Tenacious Award winner for her decades of inspiring, visionary, hard work as a campaigner, and for our Three Hijabis work ❤️🔥 We’re so proud of you, Huda, Mashallah! You deserve all the flowers sis ❤️🔥💜 Here’s part of Huda’s interview: Huda Jawad is a feminist leader and award winning anti-racist campaigner based in London. She co-founded the Faith & VAWG Coalition. Huda’s Tenacious Award is supporting The Three Hijabis, which she co-founded in 2021 with Shaista Aziz and Amna Abdullatif (She/her/hers) to tackle racism and misogyny in football and sport. Football, at its essence, is the culture and the language of the working classes, everywhere around the world. It’s sadly become more and more corporate and removed from that in most parts of the world, however, at its essence it’s very grassroots, very community focused. Whether watching it or playing it, football is ultimately humanity in its pure form. It's a pursuit of an ambition, a goal, a particular target, which is what humanity does without these systems and structures that get in the way and filter people out. It has that ability to unite people, because they really appreciate the art and the mechanics and the skill and the talent, rather than just the colours of the team member. That’s something that makes football really accessible and very, very grounded in the human experience. What’s an obstacle you’ve faced in your work, and how have you overcome it? A gazillion – the lack of time, the no money, the caring responsibilities, the jobs, patriarchy, racism. I could go on! Women like us don't do this sort of thing – we're not supported to do it, we're not expected to do it. Together, we delved into crucial topics like: * The aims of By and For Organizations within a Social Justice context * The ask beyond funding * Organizational resilience * Philanthropic Frameworks of funding and support rooted in Indigenous wisdom The FREA Network is a diverse group of funding organizations, networks, and individuals united in a mission to achieve race equality in the UK. They firmly believe that funders play a pivotal role in addressing racial inequality by providing sustained investment in Black and Minoritized Ethnic communities, enabling them to thrive. https://lnkd.in/eBjQYzeg It was truly inspiring to engage with key stakeholders who are committed to ensuring that lifesaving, life-changing, and life-preserving services continue to make a profound impact. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗴 - 𝟯𝟭 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 "On Sunday, I attended the Holocaust Memorial Day event organised by Community Solidarity Stroud District, with speakers from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities, beautiful music and many poignant reflections. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust was set up by the UK government to promote such events and encourage remembrance, helping people to learn more, empathise more and do more to create a better future. The Trust has resources online for anyone who would like to take action to prevent identity-based persecution and discrimination today. All councils must work to eliminate discrimination, advance equal opportunities for all, and foster good relations between people in the community, and it’s a role that we take seriously. In February, we will be proudly celebrating LGBT History Month, to remember those who paved the way to equal rights in our country, and all the places across the world where LGBT people still face persecution. On 1st February, councillors will discuss proposals for new community investments across the district at the Strategy & Resources Committee. Our draft budget sets out funding for market towns and a new fundraising platform for community groups. We also plan further investment in play areas and leisure services. Following discussions with Stroud Town Council and the Stroud & District Chamber of Trade & Commerce, our budget proposals include a ‘free after 2pm’ offer at the London Road and Brunel Mall car parks, and a further freeze on car parking charges for flexible-stay spaces in the town. For Stroud railway station, we’ve earmarked funding to acquire land for pedestrian and cyclist access from the Brunel Mall multi-story car park into the station, and to purchase the historic Brunel-designed Goods Shed to secure the future of Stroud Valleys Artspace. After discussion at Committee, the final budget will be voted on at the Council meeting on 22nd February."
