Sharing a Wednesday wrap-up with friends and peers. It feels like January came and went in the blink of an eye, including Walt & Company’s time spent at CES this year. While it’s the beginning of February and our team and many of our communication peers are focused on Big Game initiatives (Let’s Go Niners) and other important campaigns for the coming months, I wanted to pause for a minute to look back at a few CES 2024 highlights and takeaways: -We logged an average of 15,000 steps for several days in a row walking in-between meetings, staffing, exploring, and hosting -We met countless technology peers in elevators, Ubers, limos, restaurants, and show floor booths -We reconnected with industry and media friends, partners and past clients and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent -We happily consumed too many calories to share and quantify (at least publicly in this post) -Oh yes, and we helped our client teams meet their KPIs for CES… At the end of the long week, you can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of belonging and mutual admiration with technology peers. It takes a tremendous amount of work leading up to the show, and once you’ve made it through and enjoyed the successes that come along with it, it’s like winning the Consumer Technology Big Game. Waiting for the CTA to make rings. 😊

BIG DOING's OVER HERE! After months of procrastination, I have finally launched my bi-weekly email to my subscribers. Ok...ok...I only have 11, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? I let myself off the hook with this one for a long time because...well...only 11 subscribers. (and 2 of them are my family). So here's the thing about procrastination. It's not all bad. Had I acted on this sooner, I would not have had: ✅ my formal branding done (big props to Inga) ✅ my bi-weekly tips already prepared and ready to go ✅ 11 subscribers! So, procrastination can be seen as a delay in "getting something much closer aligned to your expectations out the door." I feel good about this...and now let this new journey begin. If you want in, subscribe on my website (link in comments) I will be sharing mindset tips and actionable tips that you can immediately implement to take back control of your inbox. 𝙇𝙀𝙎𝙎𝙊𝙉: 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙘 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙥 I'm 🌸 Susan Shier, your business guide for administration, systems, tools, and processes for attracting more clients and increasing revenue.

Take a look at this photo for 5 seconds, then look away. Now answer these 3 questions: 1. What does this company do? 2. Who is it for? 3. What is the benefit to them? Can't do it? You're not alone. --- This trade show booth from a few years ago was 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙪𝙧𝙚 on my part. I started working at the company a few months before this event but hadn't yet finished our foundational messaging work. When it came time to design the booth, we didn't have anything to go off of. So, a few of us sat around and tried to do it on the fly...by committee. 🤦♂️ We got so excited about this Hawaiian surfer theme that had ties to the company's name that we lost sight of clearly communicating what we do. The end result: Confusion. Luckily, a CMO friend saw this photo I posted and reached out to me with this short message: 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰 - 𝘚𝘖 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 Needless to say, we had the booth updated by the next event. --- 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟮 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 1. Aligning on go-to-market foundations (like messaging) matters a lot for quality and speed. If I had prioritized the foundational messaging work as I should have, I could have simply pulled my company's one-line description from my messaging architecture doc to use for this trade show booth. It would have been 10x clearer and 10x faster. Better yet, if I had included key business leaders in the development of the foundational messaging (like you always should), there would have been no need for "messaging by committee" or getting approvals from others––because they would have already given it. 2. For high-stakes projects, get feedback from those who aren't close to your work but who know what they're talking about. I'm so grateful my CMO friend had the courage to send his message and call me out. I was too close to the work (and feeling too rushed and overwhelmed at the time) to notice how big of a miss this was. I could also trust his feedback as a CMO who had done similar work before. When you don't have a CMO friend willing to call you out, turn to trusted advisors and best-fit customers for feedback. Be careful soliciting feedback from others on your team (even executives) unless they are SMEs or speak regularly to your best-fit customers. #startupmarketing #gtmfoundations
