It’s amazing how bringing in the right person at the right time can drive immediate and broad positive impact on an organization (and our community). 🙌🏻 Sarah Golman In talking with a community stakeholder this week, he shared his goal of creating lifelong employment opportunities for A+ talent in the Dallas Jewish nonprofit community. Nonprofit work is rooted in the “soft stuff” like heart, mission alignment, and compassion. Taking this role after a 15 year career in financial services, I thought I was already prepared for the “tough stuff” but I have never worked with a team so open to big change, focused on driving positive results for our stakeholders, and relentless about collaborating across the community to bring deep impact and support for those who need it most. Yes, it takes a big heart to bring your A+ game to this sector - but it requires grit, intellect, and determination, too. To attract and retain top talent, it demands investment. If you’re a donor or a board member of a nonprofit organization, consider endowing resources to fund the costliest roles in the agency you love. Similar to endowing a chair at a university, this creates operational flexibility and ensures that the organization can attract A+ talent no matter what’s going on in the market and environment around you. It was an honor to serve RaiseUp Families as their Executive Director for nearly 4 years. In that time, the organization experienced unprecedented growth: ✅ Expanded Board of Directors by 50% ✅ Doubled the number of families (clients) being served ✅ Client outcomes improved by 100% (average income increase in signature 9-month HandUp program went from 35% - 71%) ✅ Client graduation rate improved from 80% to 91% ✅ Revenue growth from $450,000 to $1,000,015 (donations from private sources) These outcomes are a result of the Board of Directors and staff working together towards a common goal, each person utilizing their unique skills and abilities in their individual role to help the bus arrive at its desired destination. They are the result of hours and hours of innovation, hard work, and determination. As RaiseUp Families celebrates its 30th Anniversary of stabilizing families from vulnerable communities who face unexpected financial crises so their children can focus on their education, giving them the opportunity for a better life, it needs a full-time leader with passion, vision, and experience to lead it forward. I could not be happier that Kate Yadan will pick up this torch and lead RaiseUp into the future! Honoring Selflessness: Beyond Company Volunteer Days Today, on Pat Tillman's death anniversary, his legacy of selfless service resonates deeply. While company volunteer days are fantastic - fostering team spirit and giving back - true selflessness extends beyond those designated hours. Imagine the impact if we all carried that spirit into our communities every day. There's an elderly neighbor who could use help with groceries. A local animal shelter overflowing with animals longing for a walk. Maybe a park cleanup neglected after a long winter. These are the countless opportunities where your time can make a world of difference. Selflessness isn't about grand gestures. It's about looking around and identifying a need you can fulfill, big or small. It's about lending a hand without expecting anything in return. Pat Tillman walked away from a lucrative NFL career to serve his country. His sacrifice reminds us that true fulfillment often comes from putting others first. So, today, and every day, let's honor his legacy by: Seeking out volunteer opportunities in our communities: Find a cause that resonates with you and donate your time. Looking for everyday ways to help: Offer to help a struggling colleague, hold the door for someone with their hands full, or simply offer a kind word to someone who seems down. Remember, even the smallest acts of selflessness can have a ripple effect, creating a more connected and compassionate community. Let's strive to be the change we want to see, one selfless act at a time.

I recently visited a local food bank. It is a food bank that picks up produce at a local grocery store. They used to pickup meats near expiration too. They have freezers and as an under-supplied, overburdened food bank, the need is definitely present. In the last six months the same grocery store stopped discounting meats to 50% and started only discounting them to 30%. I know for a fact this has led to greater discard of expired meat. They no longer allow the food bank to pick up near expiration meats. People who wouldn’t be able to afford those foods in the first place, imaginary profits and losses that never existed are their “reasoning” for throwing food away instead. People in need are not the enemy. People in need aren’t hoarding their money greedily and eagerly waiting at the donation doors. The (potential) merger of Albertsons and Fred Meyer terrifies me. They’re already coordinating their sales to justify “see we’re competing with each other and will keep doing so if you let us merge” What all shoppers have realized? Their prices were heavily inflated since first word of this merger to allow “sales” that don’t lose them a penny. Grocery prices are already unattainable for many and only worsening.
