The expansion of affordable vet care services, like the remarkable Flatbush Vet, is the real solution to shelter overcrowding. Closing intake is awful but it forces communities (neighborhood, governmental, veterinary, and animal welfare) to acknowledge their own role in either creating, perpetuating, or SOLVING the problems facing animals and people. When HPA opened its first small, full service non-profit hospital 18 years ago you could count every one of them on three hands. Now there are thousands, and even for-profits are cashing in on the affordable market. It is a major reason the stunningly rapid improvement in animal stats nationwide.
NYC animal shelters are closed for cat intake during kitten season - this is a major crisis. Thanks to Fox 5 NY for allowing me (and Garfield) to highlight the real problem: lack of affordable access to basic veterinary care, including spay neuter services. When 50% of pet owners can't afford a basic vet visit, it's no surprise we have thousands of animals flooding shelters every year. And we're still finding new cats in bad shape outside every day. Flatbush Cats is building a solution to overcrowded shelters right now. Visit flatbushcats.org/build to learn more about our new nonprofit spay neuter clinic opening soon in Brooklyn and how you can help.

Folks - we urgently need your help! The Government is going to repeal the ban on farmed animal (livestock) exports. The industry is budgeting a million dollars to make this happen. VAWA is one of the charities and volunteers trying to protect the animals from this horrendous practice - we do not have a million dollars. We'd really love and we need support for our work to prevent the ban being repealed. Despite what the industry says, the image on our Give A Little site show what the animals truly experience during export. This was taken by a New Zealand veterinarian who travelled only once on a boat, and was horrified by what was seen. Can you help with our campaign? Are you able to chip in $5 (or more :-) ) to help us keep our animals safe from this export? Please donate via our Give A Little page. You can also show support for our work by joining VAWA ($50+GST) - everyone is welcome, not just veterinarians! Are you a design or comms expert? Can you help with social media for the campaign? What else can you offer? Please get in touch! We need it all! info@vawa.co.nz Let's do this together! #staythecourse #retaintheban #AnimalWelfareMatters https://lnkd.in/gT3rtr9A

📖💔Storytime: A sad but real story of one of the many cases we face on a daily basis. Our team received an urgent call on our emergency line after hours about a small puppy, which we named Tiny, with a suspected shoulder injury. We quickly coordinated a late-night response to assist the little one, who was no larger than a small drink bottle. The puppy's injury was in reality from a vicious stray dog attack with further teeth puncture wounds, which we later confirmed upon seeing it in person. Our team skillfully sutured and closed the wound, and Tiny showed promising signs of recovery in the first 48 hours. However, tragically, the poor pup couldn't survive, likely due to infection and the severity of the injury. This heart-wrenching incident sheds light on the reality of animal welfare in Fiji. We're dedicated to making a difference and providing care to animals in need, but we can't do it alone. Your support and donations can help us save more lives and prevent such tragedies. Please help us spread awareness and contribute to our mission by donating here: https://lnkd.in/gck2ryg Together, we can create a better future for these innocent animals. Pugs have wrinkled faces because Chinese breeders purposely bred them that way. They actually aimed to create a pattern of wrinkles on the dogs’ foreheads, which resembled the Chinese character for “prince” New research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has revealed that the health of Pugs in the UK is now substantially different and largely worse than non-Pugs. Pugs are almost twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually compared with other dogs. It’s irresponsible to bring more dogs into the world when countless dogs are dying every day because there are no homes for them. Never buy animals from puppy mills, breeders, or pet stores. These cruel businesses keep operating only because people continue to give them money. #anumeenacare #nonprofits #crossbreeding #dontbuyadopt #facts #volunteering

Welcome to Week 1 of our 5-week mini-series: "Why Does Research Matter?" Demand for service dogs is growing, but non-profit service dog providers are currently unable to accommodate everyone who applies. As a result, even for individuals accepted into programs, waitlists can be several years long. Research can help by raising awareness of this issue, providing data to support greater resource allocation, and informing improvements to optimize the service dog intervention. #servicedog #humananimalinteraction #research University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine Assistance Dogs International International Guide Dog Federation Association of Service Dog Providers for Military Veterans UArizona Research, Innovation & Impact
