Good day..I am sharing this post because many people get pigeonheld into careers they are no longer aligned with. We are told during graduations we can be whoever we want. Why then is a career pivot seen as wrong or not making sense. As someone who has degrees in Social Work and Criminal Justice(my first career choice and the one I am attempting to pivot back to), it's frustrating to be seen only as a Social Worker(this happens the most) when my transferable skills are clearly listed. I am extremely grateful for every opportunity sent my way and people who value my experience. I am also a professional; confident in the versatility of my skills and the decision to pivot my career. There's nothing wrong with a career pivot. It makes that person seeking to pivot that more interesting and well rounded. Please don't box them in or assume they are not a good fit because the last few years they were dedicated to a different area of expertise💞🦋To all those looking for a new horizon; be encouraged and confident in who you are as a person and professional, and continue to strive for that opportunity. Someone will see You and Accept You! You Got This! 💪🙏🌟
It's okay to pivot! I wanted to be a nurse and failed to get into the nursing program of my choice at my desired college. So I looked into a tech school and talked to nurses about some other options. After many long conversations, I found that nursing may not be for me. So I made a pivot to get my degree in Health Services Administration. From there I worked for an incredible non-profit for 2 years. Then I went to seminary and got my Masters of Divinity. I found my passion and started down the path of chaplaincy. With a year of chaplaincy under my belt, specifically in skilled nursing facilities or hospice, I realized that I had a hard time separating my work from my day-to-day. It was very emotionally taxing. So I switched to tech after the pandemic hit. I was good at customer support and knew that I cared about helping people in any way I could. Each career shift has shaped my journey and led me to where I am today. Remember, pivoting is not just acceptable—it can open doors to new and fulfilling possibilities you never knew existed.

Senior Business Manager at TPP Recruitment - Specialising in Office & Specialist Support Temporary & Contract NFP Recruitment with a passion for the NFP sector and offering an ethical and honest recruitment service.
In recent months, I've spoken with many job seekers facing challenges in today's job market, within the non-profit sector. With redundancies and increased competition, standing out is crucial. One key tip I've shared is the power of personal connections. Sending a direct email or making a phone call to express your interest in a role can make a real difference. It shows initiative and enthusiasm, qualities that employers value. From my experience, applicants who take this proactive approach often stand out to hiring managers. In a competitive market, it's these personal touches that can set you apart and boost your chances of success. Stay proactive, stay focused, and remember that a simple connection could lead to your next opportunity. We have lots of resources available on our website to support with your job search - The Non-Profit, Charity and Public Sector Careers Hub | TPP Recruitment #JobMarket #NonProfitSector #CareerAdvice #JobSeekers #ProactiveApproach #StandOut #PersonalConnections #Networking #CareerTips #Opportunity

A different kind of career break After years of working in the corporate world, circumstance has dictated the last 4 months; providing care for my mother who has had cancer. I was fortunate enough to take a break from work, travel home to the Netherlands and become my mother’s live-in carer. An emotional and taxing experience, but a brilliant insight into the world of caring. E.g., those who looked after my mother at Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, and the ongoing support from the amazing team, Buurtzorg Nederland, who help us at home. As my mother is slowly recovering, it is time for me to think about going back to ‘paid’ work. However before I do, I would like to share some of my thoughts and experiences. Caring and kindness is invaluable in life. To care for, be kind, courteous and thoughtful to others is the best thing one can do for another. It is an obvious statement, however easily forgotten in the rat race of the commercial world. Caring for a very ill person is an extremely tough job. It is a 24/7 task, which doesn’t just include the basics, of laundry, washing, food, but also ensuring medications, key care essentials and specific products are in the house for the nursing staff. Then there is the ongoing stream of visitors, professionals and delivery personnel who need to be responded to, tea/coffee provided for, and capturing and remembering information such as fluid/nutrient intake, time asleep, exercises and so on. I have a renewed respect for all those home carers out there who endlessly and thanklessly, just carry on. Learning new skills and being open to new experiences can be done at any age. Even my mother had to learn new ways of looking after herself and make dietary changes so late in her life. I had to learn to take on the role as my mother’s carer, which was very new to me and is certainly one of the hardest things I have ever done. This role does not stop, even when I took short breaks, the worry and thoughts remain. It is extremely emotionally challenging, as well as physically demanding. But… I would do it all again, should the need arise. Let’s just hope this is not the case. A sense of purpose: Recovering from a serious illness or caring for someone requires focus. We all need a purpose to work towards, even if it is just to put our own socks on. The same counts for a carer; they can gain satisfaction from seeing a loved one improve, or find motivation in small things like preparing a home-cooked meal. Everyone needs to be given a reason to get up and a way to keep the mind focused. What’s more, never forget to look back at how far you have come. Sometimes we need to check the journey we have already taken when the goals seem small or hard to reach. As for me? I am ready to head back to the UK after the holidays and will pick up my life where I call home. I will review my career, I will focus on being kinder (to myself and others), and learn new skills with my renewed sense of purpose. #opentowork

We strongly advice candidates who are not working that they should do temporary work as this is a positive thing to have on their CV. There is nothing an employer dislikes more than a big gap on a candidates CV. It gives the impression that the individual would rather sit at home than do something positive like temporary work. However I do understand that temporary work is not for everyone, it can be scary going into a strange Company and being expected to just get on with it. So if temporary work is not for you why not consider doing voluntary work, again it is better than having a gap on your CV and will keep you occupied whilst you are not working. In addition to this you could be doing something really worthwhile. For instance you could help out in a Charity shop, or maybe you could consider taking a sick child, a disabled person or an elderly individual to a hospital appointment. Maybe you could do some fundraising for a Charity, or help out at an Animal Rescue Shelter or act as a mentor in an educational establishment. Green volunteering is very popular as we all want to keep our countryside clean, as are community projects aimed at helping out local people. What about supporting the NHS they are always really grateful for volunteers as are Care Homes. Whatever your interest there will be a voluntary job for you. So don’t have gaps on your CV – get out there and do something. By Angela Burton

14 years ago I was a Program Director for a non-profit in Reedley, CA. My job was to work with school administrators at 6-8 schools to implement their visions for their after school programs that employed a site lead and 10-20 employees at each site. I was a supervisor, an HR manager for over 100 employees, a collaborator, a data tracker, and a program coordinator, all rolled into one. I worked jointly with principals, Save the Children representatives, and Fresno County Education officers to ensure grant guidelines were being met, and to ensure it all ran smoothly and efficiently. Little did I know then that role would be one of many pieces of a puzzle that helped land my current role. In that role, I collaborated and coordinated between several invested stakeholders. Today, as a Project Manager, I collaborate and coordinate between clients and vendors. Lesson Learned: You never know how each experience might be preparing you for your future. Not every career path is a straight one. 🎤 How would you describe your own career path? Has it been straight, or does it have twists and turns? #projectmanager #transitionedteacher #careerpivot
