Thoughts on the Boeing debacle as CEO Dave Calhoun steps down today. 🛩 ➡ Loss of customer trust is hard to come back from - especially when your customers quite literally put their lives on the line for your product. I don't want to play Russian roulette every time I step foot on a Boeing plane. As a company, any company, your responsibility is first and foremost to the customers you serve - then come employees, suppliers, investors, and anyone else. ➡ An engineering-first org needs to be an engineering-led org. Key execs and board members at Boeing do not have a technical background. You cannot put non-technical people in key positions and then be shocked when they make trade-offs they don't understand. ➡ Incentives dictate outcomes and culture is set at the top. Optimizing for short-term financial returns has long-term cost, which Boeing is now paying. Not only is the brand tarnished but Boeing has lost 24% of its market cap already this year and we're not even through the first quarter. As a United Airlines loyalist who is also avoiding flying Boeing, my air travel has gotten quite frustrating lately because United flies Boeing jets for 80%+ of its mainline fleet. I have to cobble together itineraries with multiple layovers across different airlines with odd flight timings. Being in a duopoly with high barriers to entry gives Boeing more time than most would have to put out this raging fire but they are already slowly bleeding market share to their #1 competitor Airbus. Richard Aboulafia described Dave Calhoun well when he said “he’s the very best CEO that Airbus has ever had”. Let's hope there's time to take Boeing out of its nosedive.
