This paper was a collective effort in every sense and together with Bilal Khan, Dara Gordon, Shivani Chandra, and Ibukun Abejirinde I'm happy to see it seeing the light of the academic community (that cares about papers at least). Today on The Current (CBC), the invited guest from Human Rights Watch reflected on how, when we look back on the global injustices around the world, what we see is Western World Leaders often arriving at injustices after the fact - after the blood has been spilled - calling for "peace" at the expense of #justice and #accountability. The reality is that if they were to call for true justice and true accountability, they would first have to start looking at their own role and complicities. I want to acknowledge that this paper was conceptualized and drafted earlier this year in March, and since putting pen to proverbial paper, the events in the past few weeks and the release of incredibly unbalanced public statements of sympathies for one side and stark silence for others, wrapped in the guise of "peace" have revealed how institutions are NOT quite ready to be truly equitable and just in their efforts. I am reminded of the clip of #KwameTure calling for #liberation, "There's a difference between peace and liberation, is there not? You can have injustice and have peace. You can have peace and be enslaved. So peace is not the answer, peace is the White mans world. You can't have peace until everyone is equal." In the conclusion of this paper shared, we write: "As our collective consciousness around injustice continues to expand, Canadian hospitals and healthcare organisations must acknowledge institutional responsibility to dismantle structural violence against historically and present-day marginalised communities. This requires more than just well-crafted statements, but deep reflection and reckoning on our collective complicities of harm caused, whether through explicit exclusionary policies and practices or silence in the face of such practices." In light of recent events, it is obvious that dismantling power also requires COURAGE to speak truth to power.
Check out our new BMJ Leader article, synthesizing the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategic plans of 3 Toronto Hospitals. We describe the creation of DEI strategic plans at these hospitals, specific communities addressed, and goals set forth by each hospital to address health and social disparities. With more and more hospitals and health care organizations embedding DEI into their strategic plans, we provide actionable recommendations to move the needle on DEI work beyond performance to have meaningful system-facing impact. Grateful and humbled by co-conspirators Marlena Dang Nguyen (co-first author), Dara Gordon, Shivani Chandra, and Ibukun Abejirinde for collectively pouring our advocacy and hope for a more equitable world into this article. https://lnkd.in/gb-uEpHs

A dose of inspiration, just what the doctor ordered! 🩺 In 2023, @NYU Langone Health 🏥 achieved remarkable milestones, ranking #1 in New York State and #3 in the nation! But, what makes this success truly inspiring, is the incredible culture that powers the organization – by uniting all at NYU Langone from researchers, surgeons, medical students, and janitorial staff, under one "stethoscope", the best patient experience and outcomes are resoundingly within reach – NYU Langone Health now had its own heartbeat. This transformation was not just a "band-aid" solution; it led to a complete organization-wide improvement of patient communication; even small changes to policy have gone a long way: something as simple as standardizing discharge before noon across the system has turned a logistical headache for patients and loved ones into a timely and predictable process. And alongside Deloitte, they launched #TheBestOutcomes campaign, turning a vision sketched on a napkin into a community-wide rallying cry. Brand recall has skyrocketed, thanks to this inside-out approach, and NYU Langone's success story is a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. Let's continue applauding NYU Langone for injecting a healthy dose of inspiration into the healthcare world by reading the WIRED article below! 👇
