⚖ Along with the ACLU of North Carolina and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, we represented seventeen individuals, as well as community organizations Justice for the Next Generation and Alamance Alliance and achieved a significant win for police accountability and transparency.    On the last day of early voting in the November 2020 General Elections, participants in the “I am Change March to the Polls” were physically injured when officers used pepper spray on the marchers. Many individuals, including multiple plaintiffs in the case, were wrongfully arrested.   Following these events, we helped to bring a federal lawsuit that resulted in a settlement agreement with the City of Graham, the Graham Police Department, and the Alamance County Sheriff. Most informed American voters are aware that the current Supreme Court is patently and overwhelmingly biased. Decisions such as Citizens United (campaign financing), Shelby County (voter suppression through Jerrymandering), and Dobbs v. Jackson (abortion rights) have sent civil rights in America back to the “good old days” when abortion was illegal, state voting districting kept minorities from exerting any political influence, and campaign financing law to permit unlimited and anonymous contributions from special interests. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has spoken in the Senate chamber about the Roberts Court in speeches that are captured in short (15 minutes or so) videos that are absolutely riveting. Here, below, are numbers 29 and 30, describing “The Scheme” by which the Roberts Court has become the plaything of uberwealthy special interests. Justice Anita Earls of the North Carolina Supreme Court knows about some reforms that will improve our justice system. But she also knows about some that will provoke an unhappy response—including an investigation against her personally. In this first part of our interview, we discuss Justice Earls’ path from a 30-year civil rights attorney to supreme court justice, and many data- and experience-driven reforms. We also discuss some positive civil-rights trajectories over her career (such as increased scrutiny of abusive police practices), and not-so-positive trajectories (such as qualified immunity, as ever, a parade of absurdities). This will set us up to discuss how Justice Earls found herself under investigation for calling for judicial reform, which we’ll cover in part two. #AppellateLinkedIn

What should we expect of our leaders in #PublicOffice? Who should our own politicians get "in bed" with? In what circumstances would we accept our #leadership courting favour with a convicted criminal? In what circumstances would the nation that would uphold a convicted #criminal, tried in a court of their peers, not be considered a pariah state? The UK's Seven Principles of #PublicLife outline the #ethical #standards those working in the public sector are expected to adhere to. They were first set out by Lord Nolan in 1995 in the first report of the Committee on Standards in Public Life and they are included in a range of codes of conduct across public life. When #voting in the UK's general election, I'd urge everyone to look at their particular candidate and decide, to they strive to adhere to these principles? Who do they support that also strives for these principles, and who are they determined to give a #voice to?
