U.S. #elections have historically been a battleground for racial injustice, from #gerrymandering that undercuts #BIPOC representation in Congress to voter suppression tactics, and candidates who use racial dog whistles. In 2024, we have a new challenge. #AI bots designed to offer intelligent responses to political questions like "where should I vote" to "how should I vote on X topic" but have been trained on some of the darkest corners of the internet. The Surdna Foundation proudly awarded a grant to AI Democracy Projects (AIDP), a collaborative project between Proof News the and the Institute for Advanced Study with aim of addressing this challenge.   Led by Alondra Nelson and Julia Angwin, and with input from a multi-disciplinary set of experts, their inaugural project was the January 2024 AIDP Elections Forum held at Columbia University. This forum focused on evaluating how leading AI models handle questions regarding voting, candidates, ballot issues, and other key election-related information. This is a new form of AI #benchmarking that is #independent and #transparent to the public. The results? If you are seeking reliable, accurate election information, do not use AI bots.
