Sometimes people forget that communicators aren't just experts in communication. We're also experts in the industries in which we work -- we have to be. Which is why I love this piece in Inside Higher Ed (link in comments) from Morgan Alexander with Thomas K. Hyatt. It's great to see a communicator like Morgan writing about one of the biggest issues confronting #highereducation today -- what is the role of the governing board and to whom or what does it owe its loyalty? Hack to Communicate More Effectively Great communicators draw a roadmap that guides both themselves and their audience from point A to point B efficiently and effectively. Whether you’re giving an impromptu pitch or an annual presentation in the boardroom, this three-part framework can help you communicate more clearly, persuasively, and memorably. It requires three simple questions: What: Start by describing and defining the facts, situation, position, etc., that you and your audience are dealing with. So What: Then, move on to discussing the implications or importance for the audience. In other words, why is this relevant to them? Why should they care? Now What: End by outlining an action plan or next steps. This could be as complex as rolling out a new product or business plan, or as simple as setting up a follow-up meeting to check in.

For my fellow professional communicators on LinkedIn: What does empowerment look like in a communications role? For myself, I value being brought into strategic conversations (early) to be a thought partner and help develop / execute plans. Doing more strategic thinking and storytelling than slide cleanup (among others). I love ideating on campaigns, meaningful ways to tell stories, and working with stakeholders to get a clear message. Question for communicators and PR pros: I’d love your help with an upcoming presentation I’m doing on how to support our leaders/clients/etc. with their presentations and speeches. What challenges have you faced or what topics or points do you feel should be covered in a talk like this? Most people communicate what they want to say, instead of what the audience needs to hear. Focusing on your audience's needs is a critical step to efficient communication. In executive environments, it is also important to start with the bottom line, and build the storyline afterwards. Only provide details according to questions from the audience, instead of feeding details from the start that the auditors might not need, find boring, or irrelevant. #communicationskills #leadershipexcellence #executivecoaching
