Last week, I attended a Melville Chamber Women's Networking Event. The panelists discussed 6 very common issues that most of us have dealt with in our careers including professional setbacks, time management, difficult bosses, and other ones. The topic that I think resonated most with me discussed "What specific skill or area of expertise do you believe is essential for women to develop to distinguish themselves?" My favorite answers included: - the ability to read a room (both in a one-on-one situation and in group settings) - becoming an expert in your field that people turn to - listening so you can ask appropriate follow up questions - setting and beating expectations - having integrity How would you answer that question? I had the pleasure to moderate a panel of young professionals of colour at last night’s NoTurningBack2020 event. The conversation focused on the question: is ethnicity a factor when it comes to career progression and retention? The room heard stories from Naomi MG Smith MCIPR Jamal Bernard Amandeep Turna Rayna Sidhu, talking about how their ethnicity had an impact on their career journey - both good and bad. They talked about feeling the need to work harder to get the same recognition as colleagues, the scarcity of opportunities, the way employees of colour are perceived as not being high potential, the importance of good line managers and mentors, as well as the lack of diverse representation amongst senior leaders. But, they also talked about creating opportunities for themselves, taking ownership of their careers, fostering relationships, being their own advocates and finding their voice in order to meet the challenges that come with being someone of colour in the workplace. When I asked if they felt their ethnicity is an advantage or disadvantage in their professional lives, there was an acknowledgement that things are harder, but it also was their superpower. And, I agree. Identity is a superpower. If we know through data that diverse groups tend to be the most productive, why are companies still not embracing diversity at the top? The headline from this recent FT article says: ‘UK boards are prioritising experience over diversity’ https://lnkd.in/dXU2n2y4 The truth is there are diverse leaders who have the necessary skills and experience to fill those spaces, and for every Naomi, Jamal, Amandeep and Rayna, the presence of more representation at the top creates the possibility for them to dream big!
