I loved talking to Aminat Adebiyi, Ph.D., but I am slightly disturbed by how much I move my head and roll my eyes in this clip! Anyway, thanks for inviting me - I always love talking about how we can use tech tools for accountability.
One of our absolute favorite moments was having Julia Angwin, - award-winning investigative journalist and contributing opinion writer for the The New York Times - with us on our series. Julia is also founder of The Markup and an entrepreneur-in-residence at Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism's Brown Institute. During our dynamic session, she spoke on the genesis of her unique computational-based explanatory reporting style that has earned her team prestigious rewards, including Pulitzer Prize finalists and Gerald Loeb awards. She also spoke to us about the necessity of upholding accountability in Big Tech, and the importance of journalism in ensuring that policies embedded in algorithms remain transparent and can be tied to human decision-making at every point.
