Much of the proposed AI legislation is criminalizing deep fakes and other uses of AI for intentional deception. But what about the times when AI is wrong? The routine inaccuracies that we found in testing AI for election information wouldn't be covered by the proposed rules. New LATimes oped from Alondra Nelson and myself discussing how we need to expand what we demand of AI: https://lnkd.in/epabxJS3

While social media’s impact on political outcomes is often debated, it cannot be ignored that it played a role in the political upheavals of 2016, including Trump’s election and Brexit. However, what sets 2024 apart from 2016 is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion, have the capability to generate large-scale misinformation that appears plausible. When combined with the speed and reach of social media, this can create a dangerous combination. https://lnkd.in/deVma_7P

One of the big fears surrounding AI is its ability to spread misinformation. As things start amping up for the 2024 election, we have to be aware of the impact that AI could have on campaigns and have plans in place to mitigate its worst effects. I have noted, just in the past week a number of hallucinations when using various AI tools. When challenged, I have found they often self correct. While AI has the ability to create a massive amount of misinformation, I am curious as to where 'we' will use it to validate and check information presented as fact. #AI #Bias #Misinformation

Politicians Blaming AI to Evade Accountability for Their Missteps Politicians are increasingly dismissing authentic evidence like videos or voice recordings as AI-generated fakes, while deepfakes are being used for misinformation. For example, a robocall imitating President Biden's voice aimed at voter suppression in New Hampshire. Also, former President Trump claimed an ad with his mistakes was AI-made. This situation, known as the "liar's dividend," provides politicians with an excuse to deny real evidence. The advancement of AI in making believable deepfakes has surpassed the development of detection tools, causing widespread doubt about media's authenticity. The escalating abuse of AI in politics and social media underscores the urgency for effective regulation and increased public awareness to counter AI-generated misinformation. #ai #deepfakes #politics #misinformation #generativeai https://lnkd.in/dD8NSbcD
