I became a Certified Personal Finance Counselor through #Fincert. 🤑 The CPFC® program covers counseling techniques and fundamentals of personal finance management. I felt solid in my knowledge of the latter — I worked at a personal finance media startup for three and a half years and have been a freelance personal finance writer in the five years since — and was interested in diving into the former. Because personal finance is just that. *Personal*. I wanted to learn more about the behavioral aspects of money and how to effectively communicate with others about it. After all, there's a wide range of lived experiences and money beliefs out there. And speaking to people as a monolith about money and the ABCs of budgeting falls short if you don't get to know the person and their individual situation. So, what will I do with this certificate? To be honest — TBD! In the meantime, if anyone is curious about the program, feel free to get in touch with me. This month, I celebrate TWO years as a business owner! What I typically think of as my solely *online writing* business actually kicked off with an in-person marketing gig with a former client. Since then, I've worked on a variety of tasks from managing digital PR campaigns to writing long-form SEO articles. I've operated the business from both an on-the-side (picking up assignments here and there) and full-time (securing regular, recurring assignments) place. When I launched solo in 2019, two of my highest grossing months were August and December — the ~ slow ~ months — and I used the schedule flexibility to take three weeks off for travel that October. When I've had clients in tandem with a 9-5, that usually meant dedicating pockets of time at night and on weekend mornings (hours filled mostly with mindlessly refreshing social media, anyway) to writing client articles. Building this business has helped me grow my skills and connect with great people. Perhaps most importantly, it's given me *options*. I've dabbled with different client offerings, worked across industries and adjusted my workload as needed. I love living in St. Petersburg — the vibe, the people, the weather (this Philly native will never complain about the summer heat in exchange for 60-degree winter days). I wanted new headshots. But instead of going the more traditional route, I asked a local photographer if we could shoot outdoors. Against murals, by palm trees, in alleyways... more of a blended business-lifestyle shoot, really. I'm dressed ~ Florida-casual ~, if you will, and probably holding my coffee in too many of the photos.
