If the work isn’t important why are there 400 #attorneys on the team? Hmm weird. It’s ok to talk about the disconnect(s) in the legal field. We SHOULD. So this little hypothetical isn’t so little and actually is not hypothetical. I know of an ongoing #ediscovery project with FOUR HUNDRED contract attorneys on the team. Yet people insist discovery projects aren’t important, “don’t count as legal work,” are “just busy work…” whatever people say these days. Multi billion dollar, multinational companies have FOUR HUNDRED contract attorneys doing busy work on their major mergers and acquisitions? Then the 400 attorneys get penalized for “not having experience” afterwards? Who hires 400 attorneys to do “busy work?” And whose fault is that exactly? Let’s stop derailing peoples’ careers for doing the best they can to get experience and distribute the work so they actually get it. And this doesn’t even begin to get into why I am working on discovery reform. But I hope it’s #upyouraly for now.

With Nearly 'Everyone' In Favor Of This Biglaw Merger, A&O Shearman 'Is Going To Happen' - Above the Law: Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling are set to merge and create a new global law firm called A&O Shearman. The combined firm will have 4,000 lawyers, 800 partners, and 49 offices, with a total revenue of $3.4 billion. Our Robert Kamins discussed the overall 2023 decline in U.S. law firm M&A volume with Law360 Pulse’s Aebra Coe, particularly concerning small and medium-sized acquisitions. He highlighted how the trend reflects various factors, such as a desire for larger scale and a shrinking pool of smaller firms. Robert emphasized the scarcity of midsize firms available for acquisition, stating, "It's not like there's a multitude of midsize firms out there to be scooped up." He highlighted a lack of "quality, smaller" firms ready for acquisition in the marketplace or who even wish to be absorbed based on autonomy. For both larger acquirers and emerging growth firms, he expressed, "If firms do a deal, they want it to be a really good deal, one that moves the meter for their organization," he explained. "So people are looking harder at deals and waiting to find the right partners." Nevertheless, despite the overall decline, there was an increase in significant law firm deals in 2023, signaling a growing perceived acknowledgment of cross-marketing and economy of scale benefits associated with larger organizations. The legal industry's merger push evidences larger pack-strength to compete for client projects, invest strategically in technology, overcome challenges, and attract/retain top-tier legal talent.
