Drawing on the Euros starting this weekend, I always differentiate private practice and in-house like playing 11-a-side and 5-a-side football: they have the same core, but being good at one doesn't mean you're good at the other. So each that week England remain in the Euros, I'll draw on 3 comparisons. Here's my first three:
- In 11-a-side, you're much stricter in your positioning, and you have a specialism, just like in private practice.
In 5-a-side, you have to be able to pick up the ball in all areas of the pitch, defending and attacking within the same 10 seconds, just like in-house where the work is much more varied.
- In 11-a-side, things move slower. You often take a long time to work on one matter, and it's a long slog.
In 5-a-side, there are more goals, it's a faster pace, just like when you're in-house you are up and down and running around constantly, unable to predict things so easily.
- 11-a-side has a clearer chain of command: manager, captain, vice-captain, senior players etc, just like in a law firm.
In 5-a-side, everyone is treated more equally and provided more even responsibilities.
