On this day in history 01/01/24. In 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln to free slaves in US Confederate states. The Emancipation Proclamation, officially Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War. The Proclamation had the effect of changing the legal status of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the secessionist Confederate states from enslaved to free. As soon as slaves escaped the control of their enslavers, either by fleeing to Union lines or through the advance of federal troops, they were permanently free. In addition, the Proclamation allowed for former slaves to “be received into the armed service of the United States”. The Emancipation Proclamation was a significant part of the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves in the U.S., contrary to a common misconception; it applied in the ten states that were still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, but it did not cover the nearly 500,000 slaves in the slaveholding border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware) or in parts of Virginia and Louisiana that were no longer in rebellion. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had freed most slaves as a war measure, it had not make slavery illegal. The 13th Amendment in December 1865 ended slavery. Now you know. Independence Day: Celebrating Freedom and Unity Independence Day is a significant national holiday celebrated by many countries around the world. It commemorates the day when a nation achieved freedom from colonial or foreign rule, allowing it to govern itself and determine its own destiny. In the United States, Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, is celebrated on July 4th each year. On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the thirteen American colonies as a new nation, free from British rule. The day is marked with various festivities, including fireworks, parades, picnics, barbecues, and patriotic displays, all of which reflect the spirit of freedom and unity. Independence Day is a time for citizens to reflect on the values of liberty, democracy, and self-determination that their country stands for. It's also an opportunity to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence and to celebrate the achievements and progress the nation has made since gaining freedom. While the specifics of Independence Day may vary from country to country, the overarching theme of liberation and national pride remains consistent. It's a day to come together as a community and celebrate the shared ideals that define a nation's identity. #IndependenceDay #FreedomCelebration #PatrioticPride #NationalUnity #FourthOfJuly #LibertyAndJustice #Country #CelebratingFreedom #HistoricDay #RedWhiteAndBlue

Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Although this date commemorates enslaved people learning of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation, this only applied to former Confederate states. There remained legally enslaved people in states that never seceded from the Union. These people did not gain their freedom until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6, 1865. #juneteenth #juneteenth2024 #freedom #Independence #racialequity

Graham Young thank you for THIS BIG SHARE! 190 years SINCE A COLONIAL POWER STARTED TO ABOLISH SLAVERY! I watched the news with dismay last night as #African #Countries are / have been #embracing new untried / untested #ColonialPowers. The #Russian #Orthodox #Church for example (new Scam Artists); untried / untested armies recruited from Russian Jails. So Sub-Saharan Africa WANT TO PUNNISH COUNTRIES THAT WERE SLAVE TRADING; BUT THEN STOPPED IT for Countries who I know (and our family has First Hand Experience) are extremely corrupt! My late father-in-law met Mr Putin then Lord Mayor of St. Petersburg and or Russian Law Firms to "business" Post Perestroika. He did this as a favour for a US Law Firm. He had a passion for Russian Art / The Arts. His findings were that it was so corrupt that he could not support or suggest they did business together! Now what would have changed in 30 years? In fact it has probably got worse. My message to African Churches pushing out the Catholic Church and Companies with far far more stable balanced Company Head Offices where THEY DO HAVE THE RULE OF LAW: yes they have had their problems; but be careful what you wish for. As for getting Russian (other) Protection; be careful what you wish for. Those Colonial Powers have changed significantly. A major major irony: Slavery was abolished by UK in 1833. The United States of America's Civil War (1863 - 65) WAS about something that had already been outlawed by UK; which the silly Americans ARE STILL FIGHTING ABOUT 158.0 years later in which they slaughtered 1.0 million of their own kind DOES NOT SEEM TO LET UP! They are still at each other; not militarily but aided and abetted by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation; Creating News to Sell Advertising!
August 1 is the anniversary of the promulgation of the Abolition of Slavery Act in the British Empire. This is the single biggest step forward for human rights in human history. It led to the outlawing of slavery everywhere. I'll be celebrating at breakfast: https://lnkd.in/gPv6zXNz https://lnkd.in/g_KyTDHt

On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, a powerful document that proclaimed the American colonies' separation from Great Britain. Authored mainly by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration asserted that all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration cited specific grievances against the British Crown, detailing why the colonies were rebelling. Key issues included unjust taxation without representation, the imposition of laws without colonial consent, and the restriction of trade. These grievances highlighted the colonies' desire for self-governance and fair treatment. The signers of the Declaration knew the stakes were incredibly high. By putting their names on this document, they committed an act of treason against the British Crown, risking their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Had the colonies lost the Revolutionary War, these brave individuals would have faced execution, imprisonment, or financial ruin. The Declaration of Independence represents more than just the birth of a nation; it embodies the enduring ideals of freedom, equality, and self-determination. Today, as we celebrate the 4th of July, let's remember the courage and sacrifices of those who paved the way for our liberty. Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸📝 #DeclarationOfIndependence #History #FourthOfJuly #Freedom #Liberty

On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It came into effect on January 1, 1863, and called for the freeing of all slaves in the Union (the part of the U.S. during the civil war — 1861-1865 — that opposed slavery). The Emancipation Proclamation became the bulwark of the 13th Amendment to U.S. Constitution, which, when it was finally adopted on December 18, 1865, LEGALLY ended slavery in the U.S. In the same 1862, the U.S. recognised the independence of Haiti and Liberia (the only two independent black republics in the world at the time). Both nations had gained their independence in 1804 and 1847, respectively. Lincoln was America’s 16th president, and the first person from the Republican Party to serve as the president of these United States of America. The Republican Party was founded in 1854. #history #ushistory #americanhistory #abrahamlincoln #emancipationproclamation #haiti #liberia #republicanparty #usconstitution
