I'm not actively calling on commercial hospitals anymore, but I can remember many a conversation back in the day when making five year call plans for hospitals when I was in the modality space. From my space of calling on hospitals, the lack of continuity that comes from having 8 CEO's in 15 years makes it one heck of a challenge when attempting to forecast. The best way would be the needle in a haystack task of knowing who the next two CEO's would be. This short article caught my eye this morning, and accurately reflects one of the challenges in healthcare. #healthcare #leadership #turnover https://lnkd.in/gj7_kCzu

Acknowledgement of its importance is a step in the right direction, but it’s important people don’t start being told to “do” culture. Culture is an emergent phenomenon of the interaction between structure and agency. The risks here, like with “operational improvement” is that we see a wave of investment into plastering over the cracks at the core of the organisation. Perhaps, first, we should ask why less compassionate cultures emerge and what (in regards to the way we’ve historically tried to ‘fix’ stuff) has brought about such a pressure pot that has led to hostility and incivility. We shouldn’t forget contingency theory, when assessing the actions that leaders take or the behaviours they engage in.
