EV batteries with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability will have a major role in Virtual Power Plants (VPP). Other VPP components might be distributed rooftop solar, home batteries (e.g. Tesla Powerwall), smart appliances, smart thermostats, anything that can store/supply electricity or reduce load. More VPPs avoid building new centralized power plants, especially “peaker plants” which are typically gas powered. Green Mountain Power in Vermont subsidized home backup systems in exchange for permission to draw from them during peak demand. Xcel Energy in Colorado is planning a VPP program.

The Grid Research Innovation and Development department, with our countless amazing partners in electric engineering and electric operations at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, hit another R&D effort out of the park! What you WON’T read on this article, but lies in the guts of this amazing innovation, is that this microgrid utilizes Frequency-Watt settings so that the microgrid itself can cause behind the meter DERs to respond to frequency droops as a dispatch signal! In this case, where excess solar can cause issues to a microgrid in islanded mode where there isn’t enough storage to absorb, we can initiate a frequency droop on the grid forming storage system and have the BTM curtailed in order to stabalize the island without the need of a centralized control system sending active signals to the BTM assets! Whhhhaaaaaaa?! What an amazing project that continues to push the boundaries of microgrids, smart inverters, and autonomous control systems! The future is here!!!!!! Oh and btw fwiw, the microgrid also utilizes our very own designed and developed mobile enegy storage system, complete with its own switch gear and relays in a complete package. This is next level stuff. Maybe we need to make it more challenging for the team and I need to throw in more complexity to keep them on their toes… #butcanitmakeespresso? Let's #GET with it. The world is witnessing a surge in the electrification of various sectors and applications traditionally relying on fossil fuels, necessitating the expansion of power grids. However, the process of planning and constructing new transmission lines to meet the growing demand for renewable energy can be time-consuming and costly. To address this challenge, grid enhancing technologies (GETs) are proposed as solutions to quickly boost transmission capacity without large investments. These technologies include dynamic line rating, storage as transmission, advanced power flow control, and topology optimization, offering the potential to operate grids more efficiently and handle increased energy loads without compromising reliability. GETs, such as dynamic line rating technology, have the capacity to visualize the full potential of the electrical grid and enable more efficient energy transmission. These innovations can be rapidly deployed, providing real-time insights into line capacity and alternative solutions for transmitting energy across the grid. While these solutions are already being utilized commercially, there is a need for broader education and scaling of these technologies to realize their full benefits in enhancing grid efficiency and accommodating the transition to a more electric-powered future.
