Today’s top three barriers to commercial trucking #electrification: infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure.  Or as Dan Raudebaugh, executive director for the U.S. Center For Transportation and the Environment, put it to FreightWaves senior freightcaster Kaylee Nix, “The long pole in the tent is always infrastructure – whether that’s charging infrastructure or hydrogen infrastructure – getting that in place” is fundamental to the commercial viability of low-carbon trucking options. And for long-haul trucking, electrification’s requirements for huge batteries and extended charging stops are not going to cut it. Raudebaugh therefore sees hydrogen and fuel cells as the way forward on trucking’s net-zero-carbon roadway. [https://lnkd.in/gK6f7GZS] The same hydrogen solution goes for air cargo, which for the most part continues to be shipped in airplanes designed to move people not freight – and that is extremely inefficient, according to Michael Kramer, president of NOVAdev Inc. [https://novadev.aero/], an American company pioneering the design and manufacture of hydrogen-powered air freighters for an industry where, as he points out, nobody currently pays for the pollution it creates.  Also, back on the road to net-zero-carbon transportation, corporate timelines to achieve decarbonization commitments are in many cases based on what Matt McLelland pointed out are “technologies that have yet to be invented.” The vice-president of sustainability and innovation at Tennessee-based Covenant Logistics also noted that “[consumers] are part of the problem. We just can’t expect us or our competitors or the intermodal carriers or, really, FedEx, UPS, Exxon … to do [all] the work [to get to net-zero]. We have to own some of this. The vision Morten Johansen, Executive Vice President at DP World Americas shared in his Forbes article reinforces our unified approach at DP World. I couldn’t agree more with the need for synergy in our goals and strategies to enable a green maritime sector. Shipping alone contributes nearly 3% of total emissions across the globe with 90% of the word’s traded goods carried by sea. With maritime trade volumes set to triple by 2050, this is an environmental cost we need to address urgently. Our response is multifaceted and proactive, focusing on large-scale electrification, renewable energy adoption and exploring alternative fuels. It’s about transforming not only our operations but influencing the industry’s trajectory towards a more sustainable and responsible future. Our innovative efforts at the Jebel Ali Port here in Dubai to convert diesel-fuelled terminal tractors into electric-powered vehicles. This, combined with our significant reduction in emissions through the use of International Renewable Electricity Certificates (IRECs) underscores our dedication to a greener future. Our journey, however, is not without challenges. The limited availability of electric-powered equipment and the need for rapid infrastructure adaptation are hurdles we are actively overcoming through collaborations and innovative solutions. Our collective industry efforts towards climate action unites us in a common goal. By forging strategic alliances, such as with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and joining the First Movers Coalition, DP World is spearheading a shift towards a net-zero future. Our ambitious target to power 5% of our marine fleet with hybrid engines and zero-emission fuels by 2030 exemplifies our drive towards an eco-friendly and inclusive maritime industry. Entering the new year with a reinforced resolve, I firmly believe that sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand. We’re not just adapting to a greener future, we’re actively creating it.
