Can investment from TSMC, Infineon Technologies and others revive #Europe's #chip dreams? Skeptics say more government subsidies, skilled workers and end customers are needed 💡🇩🇪 New arrivals include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The world's largest contract #chipmaker plans to start construction later this year on a 10 billion euro chip facility -- its first in Europe -- right next to #Bosch's factory, with investments from #NXP, #Infineon and Bosch. #Globalfoundries is also mulling a several billion euro expansion in the city of Dresden. #Fraunhofer, #Europe's top application-oriented #research institute, is expanding its R&D facilities for next-generation advanced #chip packaging technologies and computing in memory solutions in #Dresden. This rush to expand is raising hopes that Europe can become a major player in advanced #semiconductors, vital components that power everything from #smartphones to fighter jets. But local industry veterans question whether the sudden surge in #investment and recent government support will pay off. A very big thank you again to Cheng Ting-Fang and Nikkei Asia for the full article with more background and insights via the link below 💡🙏👇 https://lnkd.in/eHGD7NAk #semiconductorindustry #semiconductormanufacturing #technology #ai #it #chips #geopolitics #semiconductors #semiconductor #foundry #tech Silicon Saxony Frank Bösenberg ❤️

Don’t forget xfab in Erfurt and Dresden.

It’s not only about investment it’s also about persistence to stay 😜. Beside all these fantastic and important major investment in Germany do not forget the low volume high mix players in the #semiconductor ecosystem. One example in this ecosystem is X-FAB with three manufacturing sites in Germany serving more than 420 customers with more than 1900 products. During the last years we invested Millions to increase our capacity in #Dresden by 50% and shipped wafers with more than 500 million dies to the value chain last year. Colleagues in #Erfurt and #Itzehoe accelerate the transformation to Microsystems. 90% of the volume shipped in the segments automotive, industrial and medical - the backbone of German industries. Greatings from our expansion area in Dresden. The building is completed meanwhile :) ✅ And we won’t stop and can’t stop:) #xfabulous

Germany is already a vital part of the supply chain. However they will never be able to catch up in packaging nor in testing due to cost of labor and skills needed at low levels as in Malaysia

That is good, but EU is not only Germany and Silicon Saxony...either we think and move as one, or there is not so much real hope for the industry...

What is needed is an overview of the customer base. And here I am not only habe the customers which require thousands (?) of wafers in mind, but sometimes customers require only a few wafers resp. chips. Who caters for their need?

Not unless they can find a way to deal with the people and skill set shortages that will last for at least a decade or longer.

EU is quickly over taking US in semiconductor industry. when it comes to MCUs, the first option which pops up usually is ST. ST's portfolio of products (chips, discrete, automotive, LDOs and all others) is really rich. Talking to my colleagues in Electronics design, these days I often hear about Infineon products too. Despite Infineon is very young but they are doing well.

Every Fab requires skilled workers at all levels in the organization ... there is a nucleus of semiconductor experience in Germany
