❤️ Red stands for Love & Life in the #PrideFlag. 🏳️🌈 We’re honoring Barbara Gittings (1932-2007), widely considered the mother of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. In 1958, Barbara started the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first lesbian civil rights organization in the U.S. She also served as editor of the DOB’s publication, The Ladder, the first national lesbian magazine. Barbara and fellow organizer Frank Kameny waged a multi-year campaign for the declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1973, with Gitting and Kameny present by invitation, the American Psychiatric Association announced the removal of its classification. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/e3uftg8P

Socialization is a one of the main benefits of public school. It's the opportunity to learn from others, engage and form connections with your peers. A child learns to respectful interaction with people who are different from them. This is pretty basic but fundamental. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not just theory. It has practical application. The teachers and the school administration have to facilitate this learning, because they have been conditioning the opposite for far too long. Denying one child the opportunity to demonstrate faith and leadership doesn't need the reference to a LGBT group for support. We can't teach what we don't know and we can't advocate for equity and support negativity. We are the role models for goodness sake! Your children's role models are not phantom people on TV. They are watching you.

This fills me with RAGE. Creekside Elementary school in Washington state is being sued. Why? Because they denied a 5th graders request for a prayer group. Here's the clincher: just one week prior, they approved an LGBTQ Pride group. REPOST for exposure!! The child's prayer group was welcome to all religions, even though she's a Christian. The school tried to use the excuse that all funding for clubs was gone back in October - but that fell apart when parents pointed out the pride club formed the week before. #thinblueline #lawenforcement

Please read this important piece by my friend Dr. Attia!
People who seek asylum in the United States often face trauma stemming from experiences in their home country. Those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are seeking asylum may encounter additional hurdles in their journey. We spoke to National Certified Counselor Dr. Mina Attia about how counselors can support this population. “In many countries, these are folks who are fleeing because same-sex activity is punishable by death. ... They’re living in this constant state of fear.” Dr. Attia shares why a trauma-informed approach is crucial in helping these clients.
