Recently, I've had numerous individuals reach out, eager to start their own ServiceNow boutique but unsure where to begin. Here’s 3 pieces of advice for you: 1️⃣ Expertise: embrace your Superniche Highlight your genuine expertise, no matter how specific. This approach doesn't limit you; it magnifies your strengths and sets the stage for a strong first impression. Once trust is built, expanding your conversation becomes much easier. Combine your platform expertise with industry knowledge: → ITSM for Public sector → CSM for E-commerce → HRSD for healthcare Find where you truly shine. 💡Found your superniche? Now build a landing page dedicated to your superniche (Will post soon some tips & tricks about how to create a successful landing page for your superniche) This minimal investment can lead to significant returns by effectively targeting your superniche. 2️⃣ Commercial Acumen: the True challenge Many worry about the logistics and admin challenges of launching a boutique—finding contract templates, setting up systems, etc. While these are important, they shouldn’t be your primary concern. There are many suppliers and partners who can assist with this. The real question to ask yourself is: → How strong is your commercial acumen? → Are you willing to actively pursue customers? This is key to your success. 💡You believe you don't have the right acumen? Well, now you know what type of co-founder you must seek 😉 3️⃣ Markets: Strategic location matters Ensure your primary location (country or region) is within ServiceNow's tier 1 or tier 2 markets. Great challengers have strategic focus.   They don’t play everywhere that the incumbent competitor plays.   Linear is a great example.   They are challenging Atlassian Jira, the incumbent for issue tracking.   Atlassian has 200K+ customers, across every industry. McDonald's’s uses Jira. So does Audi, Airbus, Adobe, Target, Hilton, many major governments. It's become a "default" product much like Salesforce in CRM. And they can bundle Jira with a wide range of other Atlassian SKUs.   But Linear has found an attractive beachhead.   Their customers are "modern software teams" and Linear's entire strategy clearly aligns around this market focus.   In the deck, I compared a sample of Linear and Jira customers.   Linear customers are: -- Software-centric companies (SaaS, fintech, online marketplaces) -- Rising stars (heavily funded, new entrants, big upside) -- Investing in Eng, Design, PM (hiring activity concentrated here) -- "Modern" teams (remote work, modern tech stacks)   In the data, you can see a sharp contrast vs Jira.   As Geoffrey Moore showed, challengers need to win an early market before “crossing the chasm.” There are many way to slice your early market. But a focused ICP is critical. Linear shows this at work. And they demonstrate beautiful strategic consistency from each pixels in their app to the website messaging to their customer stories. We see trends at saas start-ups depending on their maturity and age, of course: 📈 Hyper growth of sales 👨💻 Lots of new hires coming on board 💻 Tech stock usually includes some combination of Salesforce, Jira, ServiceNow, Coupa, GoogleDrive, Box/DropBox, Slack, Atlassian 📃 CLM status: on the hunt or recently implemented (common choice has been Ironclad, but the variety is growing in recent years); some templating work has starting; thresholds are being defined/tested 📋 Legal Ops is forming and storming, with initial focus on spend management When it comes to #CLM, there is no one right way to tackle it. You have to look at all of the factors above and the existing tech stack, PLUS culture, history and internal change management appetite. We've developed a great methodology to apply, but the outcomes are always customized.
