To Trondheim, where I come face to face with Rosenborg Ballklub's impressive young CEO Tore Bjørseth Berdal (and European Club Association (ECA) board member) to discuss the challenges of restoring one of European football's fallen dynasties back to glory.
It is now six years since his club, Norway’s most successful, last lifted a league title (in the 1990s and 2000s they had a streak of 13 consecutive titles), and four since they last competed in the group stage of a European competition, income from which used to provide the bedrock of their dominance in the Eliteserien, Norway’s tops division.
As well as slipping behind established rivals, such as Molde, more recently Rosenborg have fallen behind more nimble and focussed upstarts, such as Bodo/ Glimt, the tiny club from the Arctic, who have won three of the last four titles, and which Off The Pitch has named as one of Europe’s best-run clubs.
Lack of on pitch success – Rosenborg finished last season ninth, their worst showing in 46 years – has fed a financial crisis at the Trondheim club. There have been player sales, staff redundancies and much soul searching.
For Berdal the prognosis is simple. “To say it easily, our income has been lower than our expenses,” he says. “That's the easy answer. And then you can ask why.”
How will he turn it around? Read on 👇

Let's talk about HITTING BOMBS
But before we get into the realm of speed and power, let's start off with a list of names: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, John Daly, Greg Norman, Rory McIlroy. What do all those golfers have in common? That's right - they've all led the driving distance stats of their tours at their peak. Even Tiger Woods first burst onto the scene as the amateur that hit it further than anyone else, you could even say Tiger Woods became Tiger Woods because of how far he hit it. In any case, when it comes to golf, the bigger the bomb, the better!
We've taken this insight to heart, as anyone will tell you, we pitch a concept about HITTING BOMBS any chance we get. But then came the time when Octagon gave us the brief of our dreams - a long drive challenge at Steyn City between Sunshine Tour golfers and sports stars, featuring Jonsson Workwear.
We'd done a long drive piece with Octagon the year before at Steyn City off the roof, but this time the challenge to the golfers was the Steyn City Lagoon - which is conveniently 300m long.
An interesting note about HITTING BOMBS in golf is that everyone who plays thinks they can do it. Not everyone that plays cricket thinks they can bowl at 150kph, but with golf it's a different story. That's why it was great to feature the soccer and rugby stars. To get a point they had to carry 240m instead of the full 300m - but despite this (and the fact that the golfers are half the size of the rugby players) the golfers cleaned up.
So the next time you're out playing and swinging out your shoes, or watching golf and marveling at how far the pros hit it, just know that you're not the only one - and that we're out hear making content to fuel the golfing world's insatiable appetite for BOMBS!
