June is Pride Month, a time to support and celebrate our LGBTQ+ staff, participants and community members. It’s also an opportunity to bring attention to LGBTQ+ issues, recognize the incredible work of advocates and to reaffirm our commitment to health equity. Folks in LGBTQ+ community often face unique mental health challenges primarily due to facing stigma, discrimination, and bias in many forms. Anti-trans legislation, hate-based crimes, and discrimination do not overshadow Pride, but they can’t be ignored. Mental Health Connecticut is in support of the LGBTQ+ community and recognize that combatting homophobia and inequity is an ongoing commitment. We pledge to work towards safety in all forms for the wellbeing of our employees, program participants, and the communities we serve across the state of Connecticut. It’s National Coming Out Day. For many, coming out isn’t a one-time thing. Every new job, every service accessed, every holiday booked, brings both opportunity and risk. We know that over a third of LGBTQ+ staff in Britain have hidden that they are LGBTQ+ at work because they were afraid of discrimination. In healthcare, almost one in four LGBTQ+ people (23%) have witnessed anti-LGBT remarks by healthcare staff. One in seven have avoided treatment for fear of discrimination. The HRA is a place where our staff and our community know that we value them, just as they are. We try to keep conversations alive across the organisation to ensure that LGBTQ+ identities, needs and contributions are always on the agenda, in work, and in health and social care research. #NationalComingOutDay

In 2024, Pride represents more than just a celebration of identity and diversity—it’s a beacon of love, inclusivity, and mutual support. As we come together to honor LGBTQ+ communities, we must also focus on the importance of mental health and self-care. Pride in 2024 is defined by our collective commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s about embracing our differences and championing love in all its forms. Cultural Awareness in the Workplace: 1. Educate Yourself and Others: Take the initiative to learn about the histories and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Share resources and encourage open conversations. 2. Inclusive Policies and Practices: Advocate for and implement inclusive policies that ensure a safe and supportive environment for all employees. Let’s make Pride 2024 a celebration of love, acceptance, and holistic well-being. 🌟

LGBTQ+ children experience bullying at greater rates than their straight and cisgender peers. Bullying is a strong risk factor for youth suicide, with data showing that LGBTQ+ kids are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight and cisgender peers. 😞 August is Don’t Be a Bully Month, and we’re reminded of the dangers of treating people without kindness and respect. Treating people with kindness, fairly, and with respect should be something we all strive for every month of the year. ❤️ Learn more about one•n•ten a local organization supporting LGBTQ+ youth: https://lnkd.in/gReuktVe Stand up for workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations by signing the Unity Pledge: UnityPledge.com
