Scorching heatwaves are testing our climate-changing world’s resilience. The past few months have seen parts of the U.S. brace for a record heat wave, with wildfires spreading in the West, Greece closed the Acropolis due to extreme heat, causing tourist casualties and more than a dozen pilgrims succumbed to heatstroke during the Hajj. By May, 1.5 billion people experienced life-threatening heat, and global temperatures have consistently broken records. Human activities caused 92% of last year’s warming, making it the hottest on record. By 2030, 4 billion people will face extreme heat, escalating to 5 billion by mid-century. This climate crisis highlights a growing global divide, with wealthier regions experiencing milder winters while poorer countries face deadly heat without adequate resources. Vulnerable communities feel increasingly helpless, with women and the poorest households most at risk. Collectively as an industry we're seeing more of a need to find sustainable solutions to counteract the increasingly severe fallout from climate change. The Department of Labor has proposed a new rule to safeguard millions of U.S. indoor and outdoor workers from extreme heat. This rule requires employers to develop a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Plan, including heat risk assessments, provision of drinking water, rest breaks, and indoor heat control. Special measures for workers unaccustomed to high heat are also mandated. Once published in the Federal Register, the public can submit comments, followed by a public hearing. This proposal builds on OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on heat safety, making guidelines enforceable. Assistant Secretary Douglas Parker stated, “Workers are suffering and dying from heat exposure. This proposal is a crucial step in protecting them.” The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health praised the proposal as essential, especially as climate change increases temperatures. Read more below and comment your thoughts on the extreme heat in the workplace. https://lnkd.in/gkP2h5hJ #WorkplaceSafety #LaborNews #OSHA #EmployeeWellbeing #PublicHealth

Volkswagen (VW) has announced it will be investing up to $5 billion in Rivian, a US-based electric vehicle (EV) maker and Tesla competitor. This strategic partnership will allow VW and Rivian to share cutting-edge technology, boosting their presence in the EV market. Rivian's shares surged nearly 50% following the announcement. VW will initially invest $1 billion, with an additional $4 billion by 2026. This comes as competition intensifies and Western countries plan tariffs on Chinese EV imports. Founded in 2009, Rivian is navigating financial challenges, reporting a net loss of over $1.4 billion in early 2024. The partnership offers VW access to Rivian's advanced software, aiding VW’s transition to electric vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates in the evolving automotive industry!
