In supply chain management, micro and macro positions refer to different levels of focus and responsibility within the overall supply chain structure. 1. **Micro Positions:** - **Focus:** Micro positions involve a detailed, specific focus on individual components or processes within the supply chain. - **Responsibility:** Individuals in micro positions may be responsible for tasks such as inventory management, order processing, quality control, or managing relationships with specific suppliers or customers. - **Example Roles:** Warehouse supervisor, procurement specialist, inventory analyst. 2. **Macro Positions:** - **Focus:** Macro positions involve a broader, strategic focus on the overall supply chain and its alignment with organizational goals. - **Responsibility:** Individuals in macro positions typically oversee the entire supply chain, making strategic decisions to optimize efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance overall performance. - **Example Roles:** Supply chain manager, director of logistics, chief supply chain officer. While micro positions deal with day-to-day operations and specific functions, macro positions are concerned with the overall design, coordination, and strategic direction of the entire supply chain. Both micro and macro perspectives are crucial for effective supply chain management, ensuring that operational details align with broader organizational objectives.

Supply Chain Management Where is your focus area, or your strengths? You have to choose before embarking on the profession. There's: 1. Planning or forecasting and Analyst 2. Sourcing and Procurement 3. Logistics/shipping 4. Transportation and Distribution 5. Warehousing 6. Inventory and Store Management 7. Import and Export So, you have to choose or look at your strengths and hone or sharpen it. My suggestion, hire an expert or a professional for those you aren't very good at and outsource the rest. But you should have average or a panoramic understanding of other aspects of supply chain ⛓️. You should master and specialize in 3 to 4, at least. Remember, the other specialist you would hire, should also have a clear knowledge of at least 3 to 4 as well, others maybe outsourced, for efficiency. You however also require human and material management skills, as a leader, to succeed as a Supply Chain Manager. Tell me please, did I miss out something 😃?

Reflections part 1/N I look back to my career as a supply chain professional, and I've been moving places, each time moving a bit from the back up to the front row (execution to planning). I started in 3M's global service centre in APAC region. 3M has had decades of organisational optimising here and there, leading them to a splitting of roles (just like everywhere else): 1. Supply planners - who sits in plants, being able to act and decide close to where the action is. 2. Sourcing / Vendor managers - who are stationed in regional HQ (country office), staying close to strategic vendor partners, eager to conclude periodic negotiations whipping/guiding the supply pool in the right direction. 3. Buyers - the role in charge of maintaining data, pushing out orders and chasing after deadlines. Depending on where your org sits in the value chain, those who follow the GE/Apple model would also have procurement engineering roles who works on product development projects, or are largely stationed in critical outsourced plants to supervise quantity and quality deliverables. *Damn I am aching to dive into this side of my field* My first job with 3M would fit the role of buyer I described above. Being largely excluded from having to crunch forecast numbers and inventory planning, this role with all its energy naturally needs to focus on SOMETHING --- process improvement. Finding the local optima, finding ways to further slim down wastes in a mature process chart. It was a great training ground to hammer in the value of quality early on and I benefit from it to this day! To my first boss, my teammates, if you're reading this, hey I miss you all. ^^
