The secret to hiring great people. Your Leadership + Your Team. Show them who they will work for. Show them who they will work with. What does this look like in your interview process? If you are currently interviewing a Senior Project Manager, Civil Engineer, COO, Director of Engineering, or other high-caliber roles - get your leadership involved in the process sooner rather than later. Your C-Suite should be involved early in the interview process. Show them the vision and mission of your company and give them a chance to hear from the leaders of the business. Create opportunities for casual moments with team members they will be working with. This can be lunch, dinner, or happy hour, but it needs to happen. Your leadership and your team are your primary competitive advantage. The fancy gym membership stipend or exciting projects don't typically move the needle. If you have the culture you say you do - your people will be what sets you apart.

How do I progress from a Manager of Engineering to a Director? 💭 📈 When you're in the position of a Manager, its only natural to begin thinking about how you progress to that next stage... but the jump from Manager to Director is harder than it seems. There are 3 key areas that businesses look for when hiring a Director of Engineering. 1) Has this person successfully scaled and led teams? 👨🔬 👩🔬 - Moving into a directorial position demands more than just technical proficiency. It necessitates honing leadership skills that extend beyond technical know-how. If you haven't already, it's crucial to begin expanding your responsibilities to include accountability for team performance. Merely having technical oversight is insufficient in today's landscape. 2) Has this person been responsible for the strategy? 📄 - As a manager, your primary focus may not involve shaping the division's strategy, as this responsibility often rests with senior leaders. However, actively engaging in strategy planning and execution can significantly enhance your prospects for transitioning into a Director role. Seeking opportunities to be part of strategic discussions, even if initially without direct input, exposes you to strategic thinking and fosters your development in this area. Embracing such exposure cultivates a mindset geared towards strategic contribution. 3) Does this candidate have proven experience in Process Improvement? 📈 - Directors often spearhead transformative change within organizations. Hiring managers highly value candidates with a track record of shaping processes, streamlining operations, and optimizing workflow. As a manager, it's essential to start assessing your team's internal workings and collaborate with senior leadership to introduce improvements in processes or operations proactively. This proactive approach not only enhances your leadership profile but also aligns you more closely with the skill set sought after for directorial roles. We're actively recruiting for many Director roles, from Director of HSE to Director of Field Service. If you or someone you know may have the skills and experience needed to move into a more senior position, please reach out directly!

What Can an Interim Operations Director offer your business? As a manufacturing business, your success is heavily dependent on your operations. But what happens when your operations director leaves unexpectedly, or you're struggling to meet your goals due to operational inefficiencies? That's where an interim operations director can help - and the benefits can be significant. A few years ago, a manufacturing company came to me with a problem. Their Production Director had resigned and they were contemplating hiring an interim Operations Director director, this left the company without a clear path forward. The company was struggling to meet its production goals, and morale was very low among the staff. I was able to work with the company to provide my services as an interim operations director and quickly got to work assessing the company's operations and identifying areas for improvement. I was able to work closely with the staff to implement new processes and procedures, and provided guidance and leadership to get the company back on track. Building the team back up was something I was extremely proud and at the end of the contract, I honestly knew the team would continue to grow and prosper. The results were impressive. Within just a few months, the company had increased its production capacity and also reduced its wastage rates, and morale among the staff had significantly improved. This is just one example of the many benefits of an interim operations director for manufacturing businesses. Whether you're facing unexpected challenges or simply looking to improve your operations, an interim Operations Director can provide the leadership and expertise needed to achieve success. So if you're struggling with operational challenges, or looking to take your manufacturing business to the next level, consider bringing in an interim operations director. The benefits can be transformative, and the results can be truly impressive. Let's have a chat. #ukmanufacturing #operations #consultancy

"We cannot allow engineers to make decisions as they don't understand business concerns!" 🤑 Stop hiring toddlers and start talking to engineers as adults. Ask your CTOs or other engineering leaders why the highest-paid employees in the company don't have a clue about the business impact of their work. Provide engineers with enough context, like why you need something delivered next week and why you want it to be delivered a certain way. This isn't to make engineers feel important. This is to ensure they have enough information to make engineering decisions that support both immediate and long-term business needs. I do admit that not all the engineers are keen to understand business concerns. But to have a full team of engineers who don't care about the business—it's really awful people management!

Leaders, have you defined & re[defined] jobs for your team mates ? It’s a given of human nature that whenever people get an assignment that they can’t or don’t want to do, they’ll make up a different one and do that instead. If a job is unchallenging, they’ll redefine it to be more interesting, and if it’s not doable, they’ll turn it into something that they can accomplish. Sometimes that works out, but mostly it doesn’t, because the job doesn’t fulfill its intended function. Managers will be far more effective if they take time to sit down regularly with employees and explore what their job preferences are and how their tasks can be both achievable and engaging. Carefully designing the jobs of subordinates and superiors to be both challenging and achievable is one of the most important personal-effectiveness tools for any manager. If you don’t do it well, you’ll cause those around you to redefine their jobs—and your work will be the collateral damage. But if you do it consistently, their work will add value to yours—the ultimate win-win #definingjobs #designingjobs #rightjobs
