Join us at #Upswell23! “Exploring the Decline of Nonprofit Advocacy and Public:” Nonprofits are a catalyst for democracy and systems change in the United States. Our organizations bring individuals together to educate leaders — particularly policymakers — about our missions, community challenges, and potential solutions. Unfortunately, findings from recently released research commissioned by Independent Sector determined that a significantly lower proportion of nonprofits report advocating or lobbying today compared to 20 years ago. How can we get nonprofits off the sidelines and onto the playing field? The answer is simple. There is power in numbers. Together, nonprofits can strengthen our collective influence through our collective impact. This discussion will take a deep dive into what we’ve learned about the current state of nonprofit advocacy and civic engagement. This session is designed for all levels of advocacy or civic engagement experience; from no experience to substantial experience. As part of our capacity building strategy, Hollingsworth partners with Greater Good Greenville (GGG). GGG galvanizes nonprofit organizations, philanthropic funders, and mission-minded businesses and individuals – for collaborative problem-solving and learning, advocacy, and joint investing to address our community’s challenges. GGG’s work is centered around three pillars. The first is capacity building - they build the capacity of nonprofits, funders, and mission-focused people in doing their work with greater impact. They've had sessions on HR, working with the media, grant-writing 101, leadership, and issues like zoning and education. Their next pillar is collective voice - they strengthen the advocacy know-how of their partners and build relationships with elected officials. The podcast, Simple Civics: Greenville County, has more than 30,000 listens since it launched. They interviewed all county council candidates but one, all school board candidates, and more. They host an advocacy academy and elected official/social sector connection events. Their final pillar is community transformation. An example of this is the event Greenville's Promise in which community members were able to learn about data that indicates that the percentage of Black households in the City of Greenville has declined since 2010 and discussed ways to preserve and attract Black households in our urban areas with a focus on solutions. Follow ups from the initial event include tenants’ rights, eviction policy, local impact investing, and asset-based community development. GGG’s work is directly tied to Hollingsworth’s focus on building the capacity and infrastructure in Greenville to implement and amplify solutions that work. As we continue to spread the word about the Virginia Community Engagement Index (VCEI), we want to thank the diverse group of individuals and organizations who made this work possible, including AmeriCorps and Points of Light! During the process of building the VCEI, we recruited a Core Team of partners representing 38 diverse public, private, and nonprofit organizations across Virginia to help us identify what the VCEI needed to be. The central questions we set out to uncover were, “Who are Virginia’s community volunteers and civically engaged residents? What do they care about? Where and how are they engaging? And why?” Together, we developed a study that could help us better understand the degree to which service, volunteerism, and civic engagement is a strength in our communities, and how to continue to build and leverage that strength.
