US Hispanics over-index on live TV viewing compared to the general market—across all genres, including news, entertainment, and sports. For Latinos, live content is a cultural connector, bridging distances and connecting generations. Miguel Gurwitz discussed this and related topics during the "Power of Live" panel at #CannesLions2024, hosted by NBCU Advertising & Partnerships and FreeWheel. #NBCUCannesLions #CannesLions

Latinos are significant consumers of media and entertainment. Comprising around 19% of the U.S. population, they account for 24% of box office ticket sales and 24% of streaming service subscribers. These figures highlight a great opportunity, and not just for Hollywood! These numbers speak to an opportunity gap in Latino representation in Hollywood – but the reality is more complex; let’s dive deep. https://lnkd.in/eq_y9YEJ

Among the universal challenges that I heard at today's Radio and Television Summit of the Americas is that broadcast regulators are not only slow to address the asymmetrical regulatory burden for broadcasters, but they continue to impose additional burden onto the regulated sectors. We're already seeing station closures and layoffs in the sector...if that doesn't convey the urgency, I worry about what it will actually take to move these processes along meaningfully.

📺 Who knew that there was a day dedicated to television? Well, there is, and it's called World Television Day! In 1996, the United Nations declared November 21 as a day to celebrate the little box that has brought us countless hours of entertainment and news. From quality dramas to nail-biting sports events, our TVs have been there to make us laugh, cry, and sometimes even scream at the screen. In Ireland, the TV industry has seen some massive changes in recent years, with the rise of digital TV and streaming services. But, traditional TV still has a significant impact on Irish households. It's still the go-to for many people when it comes to news, entertainment, and advertising. What's even better is that Irish television broadcasters have made great strides in ensuring that their programming is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. By providing closed captioning, audio descriptions, and sign language interpretation, they're making sure that everyone can enjoy their favorite shows and movies. This year's World Television Day theme was all about accessibility, and it's fantastic to see Irish broadcasters continuing to build on these improvements. So, let's raise a remote control, and cheers to the wonderful world of television! #worldtvday #tvaccessibility #tvadvertising

One of the concepts of my master's thesis back in the day was that every new media inception tends to syphon away the upper class that can not only afford it but enjoy it (financial + cultural capital). That leaves the less desirable (for advertisers) audiences to more traditional media. This happens over and over, from the inception of TV vs radio, cable vs broadcasting and now streaming vs cable. So if broadcasters and cable nets are relegated to audiences with less capital, it only makes sense to observe an overlap of interests between these media groups and political interests focused on this type of voter. No scariest example than Univision's dramatic turn to MAGA. What media groups may consider though is that every political grandstanding may come at a cost, or so a bird told me.
