In the past three months I’ve met with 17 business leaders who aren’t satisfied with their recruiting. Here’s are six common root causes I found in their processes: - Not clearly defining the core challenges that must be overcome to generate the required performance - Interviewing for everything, rather than going very deep on the specific things a candidate has to execute to overcome the core challenges - Missing the opportunity to get insightful information by just doing tick the box reference checks - Assessing culture fit by directly asking for an example of when you demonstrated x value - Senior person process overrule - Focusing on results only, rather than understanding how a candidate has created their results and comparing that to what’s required in your context #hiring #recruitment #founders #talent

Here is a typical conversation I have with leaders and executives: Me: What is the most critical risk to your business today? Them: Not able to find and retain talent. Or even worst, hiring the wrong people. Me: And who is responsible for making these important hiring decisions in your company? Them: Hiring managers. Me: And how are you making sure they have the right tools and skills for this? Them: Huh? There IS a common missing link among companies who struggle to successfully attract, select, and retain top talent. It involves the effectiveness of their hiring managers.
