Chief of Population Health and Accountable Care | Improving Population Health and Healthcare Affordability | Upstreamist | PLS | CHCF | RWJ
🚨 Firearms are the leading cause of death among children ♦️ 54% of US adults report that they or a family member have experienced a firearms-related injury. ♦️ The rate of firearm suicide rates among children increased 20% across the population-- an access issue. ♦️ 56% of unintentional firearm deaths among children occur at home with 76% with guns left unlocked and 74% left loaded. I had the opportunity to hear Gregory Jackson Jr., Megan Ranney, and Michael Dowling speak last week about the impacts of gun violence a public health crisis. This week the Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health emergency. Like seatbelts and smoking, there are real steps that can be taken to help save lives. There are steps that do not even push hard on the second amendment but really improve safety, especially for young kids. #publichealth #populationhealth #childsafety #gunsafety #ourlane #healthcareonlinkedin

📰 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a new report highlighting that rates of gun injuries in 2023 have remained above pre-pandemic levels for the fourth consecutive year. This data, gathered from ambulance calls in 27 states up until September 2023, reveals a nuanced picture of firearm violence in the post-pandemic era. The report underscores the urgent need for states and communities to develop and implement comprehensive firearm injury prevention strategies. The unequal distribution of high rates and increases in firearm injuries necessitates targeted interventions to protect our most vulnerable populations. 🤲 Together, we must strive for a safer future for all communities. Let's advocate for effective prevention strategies and support efforts to address the root causes of firearm violence. https://lnkd.in/eai76F_r #PublicHealth #GunViolence #CDCReport #CommunitySafety #FirearmInjuryPrevention #HealthEquity #police #lawenforcement #shootings #crime

More than 48,000 Americans lost their lives to firearms in 2021. As horrifying as this statistic is, it represents only a portion of the health harms associated with firearm injury. For every person killed by a firearm, about two others are physically injured – learn how the U.S. can support those impacted in this new report from the @AspenInstitute’s Health Strategy Group: https://bit.ly/3urDp7U #AspenHealthStrategy #gunviolence #healthcare #mentalhealth

When will this country get over its sick addiction to guns? We need action, not “thoughts and prayers” after endless mass shootings, like the one I personally experienced in Las Vegas, and after which nothing changed to protect the public. The NRA won’t even stand for research into gun-related violence, part of the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil,” stick your head in the sand attitude of Republicons. As this article notes: “In 2020, gunshot wounds surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. The rates of firearm mortality for young people in America is nearly six times the rate in Canada, nearly 23 times the rate in Australia and nearly 73 times the rate in the United Kingdom.” Enough already!!!

The declaration highlights the impact of gun violence on communities, such as physical injuries, psychological trauma, and economic burdens. It calls for comprehensive measures, including research, community-based interventions, and policy changes, to mitigate the widespread effects of gun violence and promote public safety.
