We asked our #BoardMembers to respond to a couple of questions for our #MeetTheBoard series. We would like to introduce our President, Lynn Ann B., a Consultant for the Nevada Medicaid Dental Services Program. Short has more than 20 years of experience developing and managing school-based #oralhealth programs. What do you enjoy most about being part of the Delta Phi Chapter? Since my induction into the Delta Phi Chapter in 2020, I have very much enjoyed meeting and working alongside other Delta Phi members as well as welcoming our new members at their inductions. Our members are very much engaged in and passionate about improving the public's health through local, statewide, and even national initiatives. In November 2022, I attended the annual meeting of Delta Omega at the American Public Health Association meeting in Boston. I was able to meet with Delta Omega members from institutions of higher education across the country. Even in this larger setting, you become inspired by the experiences and drive of professionals in every facet of public health. What does it mean to be a leader in public health nowadays? Leaders in public health need to effectively communicate - they need to be honest and transparent, which builds trust. During the pandemic, the challenges public health was experiencing in communicating information became evident. Because science and best practices are ever changing, leaders need to acknowledge this with the public. It's also important for leaders to recognize that the public will have differing viewpoints and priorities, and their sources of information may also differ. 🙏🏼Meet my son. He came with me to the clinic. He decided to wear a white coat. You can only imagine the feeling that I had. 🚀As stewards of the healthcare domain, we find ourselves at a juncture where the emergence of a new generation of medical professionals warrants our deliberate attention and strategic action. 🌐 An imminent concern looms: Projections indicate a potential dearth of up to 139,000 physicians in the United States by the year 2030. This impending shortfall underscores the urgency to formulate avenues that facilitate the integration of these aspirants into the healthcare workforce, thereby fortifying the foundation of quality patient care. 🏥💙 👉🏼This is even worse in underrepresented groups. #Hispanic #Physicians are only around 6% of doctors that we have in the #US. Clearly, this number represents a barrier and a gap that needs to be resolved. 🛤️ These pathways rests upon us collectively. Another day, another "urgent crisis" In his Q&A with reporters after delivering remarks at the National Press Club yesterday, American Medical Association president and "digital health guru" Jesse Ehrenfeld MD MPH, sounded the alarm on another mushrooming problem with the American Way of Healthcare, one that positions the country in the same messy quadrant as Liberia, New Zealand, Greece and the United Kingdom: "The physician shortage that we have long feared -- and warned was on the horizon -- is here," he said. "It's an urgent crisis ... hitting every corner of this country – urban and rural – with the most direct impact hitting families with high needs and limited means." Put aside for the moment the AMA's opposition to expand pharmacists' scope of practice, and the mind-numbing call for "bipartisan" legislation from a divisive and dysfunctional government. Legacy narratives are no guide to invent different futures. It's new strategy stories, #positioned with a unique assemblage of words, that can fertilize the PowerPoints with different vision. A thought experiment: What would be the kinetic potential of: - Policy innovation where the United States invests in the medical schools and training of healthcare professional in Latin America, at Marshall Plan scale? Not as a way to "create smoother pathways for foreign-trained physicians" to practice in the United States per se, but as a spark for economic development and resilience in Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, Ecuador and Nicaragua? - Policy innovation where the American Medical Association + American Pharmacists Association + PhRMA combine energy and investment to construct a new platform for market innovation that positions healthcare as the real wealth of nations? - Policy innovation where the United States Department of Defense + Harvard's Growth Lab + American Medical Association collaborate to elevate healthcare as a new form of economic statecraft, another tool in the "The Arsenal of Democracy"? We are on a road to nowhere because we are comfortably numb with the status quo. It's time to start seeing and doing with a different cognitive pattern, a whole new taxonomy to energize strategic imagination, something original in the content and communications to inspire and persuade. Until that happens, we can expect another 50 years of strategic atrophy, with leaders at conferences and speaking events imploring someone, anyone 'out there' somewhere in the ether, to "fix" the crisis in healthcare, the crisis in the environment, the crisis in immigration, the crisis in demographics, the crisis in mental health, the crisis in poverty, the crisis in crime.....
