“So I need a new headshot, now what?” ⬇️ - Do you want a headshot or a portrait? The difference being a headshot is really just the face with a bit of the shoulders and a solid background. These are great for LinkedIn and/or company email signatures. Portraits usually include at least the waist up and are more editorial in nature and include the surrounding environment with a blurred background. These are typically done for branding sessions and websites. - Background type: Studio (solid background) or Environmental (in context with blurry background). The sky is the limit on this, so it's important for me to find out what you are using the images for / who the intended audience is, and what you are trying to communicate about yourself with the images. - Do you have an inspiration photo that you’ve seen that you really like and catches your eye? This will tell me volumes as to what the setting will be (indoors or outdoors), time of day, time of year, lighting set-up, hair and make-up, wardrobe, etc. - I always recommend professional hair and make-up for your shoot. I can include it and arrange it as part of your package. I can also recommend stylists in the area and you can arrive camera-ready. - Addressing all these items and planning ahead will really lead to a great headshot or portrait. The key is meeting expectations and creating an image of yourself that you can’t wait to share.

It's the first impression that you have of the character before they open their mouth, so it really does establish who they are." In my late-20s I attended an important final interview with the managing partner of the South African operation of a global consultancy. I knew I wouldn't fit in there - they were a blue company and I was an orange person. But I was desperate for the job, so I bought myself an expensive, tight-fitting, tailored suit for the occasion. When he greeted me and extended his hand, I jumped up from the reception couch and my pants split from the bottom of the zip to above my buttocks. There was a loud crack. He knew it and I knew it, but neither of us mentioned my humiliation in fear of embarrassment. Three days later he phoned to say that although they liked me and felt I would make a good contribution, I wasn't a good cultural fit. The way you look and feel is important in establishing authenticity from the start. First impressions matter. One of my most important goals is to inspire confidence in my clients. This can be for their looks and/or performance at work or in business. Also, what I like for myself, I want for my clients.
