In preparation for my planned reading of Barbra Streisand's memoir "My Name is Barbra" (almost 1000 pages!), I of course felt it was imperative to re-watch "The Way We Were", one of my all time favorite NYC movies about love and more importantly friendship between men and women. And wouldn't you know, the film opens with a reflection in a Central Park lake featuring 745 Fifth Avenue, where I officially began my career in real estate/property management. 745 Fifth Avenue would figure importantly into my early career as I eventually became the General Manager and then was hired by the anchor tenant Primedia to join their internal real estate team. Fast forward to later in my career when one of my most important clients was headquartered there (in a portion of the former Primedia space, of course!). More evidence that NYC is truly a small town of infinite connections and stories.
Last week I sat at the BOMA conference table, as I do every month, with the General Managers of The MetLife Building, One World Trade Center, and The Empire State Building, among others. I am truly in awe of these folks. And then of course I have on my own team the managers of The Mobil Building, Amazon’s incredibly transformed former Lord & Taylor flagship store and the Scholastic HQ in SOHO where visitors are greeted by images of Clifford the Big Red Dog each day. Iconic does not even begin to describe the assets we are entrusted with in our portfolio. But that is, simply put, status quo for NYC real estate.
I’ve been giggling to myself lately as the press has started to sheepishly admit that NYC office real estate is in fact NOT dead. Once again those summoning Taps for NYC have had to put down their bugles. There seems to be an overwhelming demand for top tier office space. Deals are getting done. NYC is not dead. And it will continue to be the backdrop for so many films, novels and real life dramas for generations to come. And now I will dive into Barbra’s memoir - yet another story that started in NYC, the city that refuses to sleep! #nyc #propertymanagement #pmlife
