Director of Operations Support @ Republic Services | Environmental Attorney | Risk Management | Due Diligence | Government Affairs
Check out the monumental work being done by Grow Detroit's Young Talent (GDYT), which has entered its ninth year. Since 2015, this annual summer work program has opened up a staggering 70,000+ employment opportunities for the youth in Detroit. With an astounding 8,500+ roles available this summer, they've been incredibly instrumental in lighting the path towards the future. What really stands out for me is the breadth of roles available, ranging from entry-level positions to Career Pathway Internships. This diversity embodies a crucial principle: To empower the younger generation, we need to invest in a wide variety of experiences, not just pigeonhole them into a select few. The future of any community’s local workforce is only as good as our commitment to nurture it. When we provide young people with employment opportunities, we do more than just help them earn an income - we shape their worldview, equip them with vital skills, and above all, provide them with a strong footing to launch into what may become their lifelong passion. Investing in youth is a long-term commitment with returns far beyond the immediate balance sheet. It fosters a community of well-rounded individuals ready to tackle the complexities of the 21st-century workforce. It feeds into the cycle of innovation, productivity, and resilience that drives our businesses forward. The genius of GDYT is that it plants the seeds for a brighter future, one summer at a time. And each of us, as members of the business community, have a role to play in watering these seeds. Remember, the most valuable asset of any business isn't in its balance sheet - it's the potential in its people. #GrowDetroitsYoungTalent #YouthEmpowerment #investinpeople

An Economic Developer embedded within the CAPS Network working to make an impact on our future workforce through authentic business & education partnerships
Recently, I was asked to comment by a key thought leader in the work-based learning space, Peter Hostrawser, on the benefits of businesses engaging with education when it comes to profession-based learning. In the CAPS Network here is what we have experienced. 1. Supporting education in your community and the authentic development of the local future workforce. 2. Employees earn servant leadership experience while supporting students' learning experiences and sharing their professional and personal experiences. 3. Through client-connect projects and professional-based learning, students make actual contributions to the businesses' work and bottom line. 4. Students can see what skill sets and career paths are available with local employers. 5. The obvious and most delicate one is that employers get to showcase job opportunities with their companies. *Caution: This one can be seen as a one-way relationship with an advantage to the company, not students. When you get business and education connected make sure it is mutually beneficial to the student’s education, businesses core goals and it benefits the local community.
