Pride Month was established in 1999 by President Bill Clinton in recognition of the Stonewall Riots and gay activism throughout the years. In 2009, it was renamed LGBT pride month by President Barack Obama. In 2022, 28% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing homelessness or housing instability at some point in their lives — and those who did had two to four times the odds of reporting depression, anxiety, self-harm, considering suicide, and attempting suicide compared to those with stable housing. Today, over 11.5 million adults in the U.S identify as LGBTQ and one in ten youth identifies this way. These numbers are surging because society is becoming more accepting of people for who they are. Despite this progress, change still needs to happen. It is challenging to be proud of who you are when there are still people and laws that that discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. Nonetheless, showing off your pride can be incredibly rewarding. There’s so much history behind the different kinds of pride flags that exist today.

Discussions on diversity in corporate boardrooms are expanding beyond focusing solely on women. Regulators are considering broader disclosure regulations to include the LGBTQ+ community. Read the latest op-ed from Sarah Kaplan, ICD.D on the research findings (with support from LGBTQ Corporate Directors Canada) which examined LGBTQ+ representation on TSX-listed boards from 2015 to 2022. 👉 They found only 9 board members openly identifying as LGBTQ+ in 2022, comprising 0.15% of all board members that year. ❓ This stark underrepresentation raises important questions about barriers to disclosure and access to board positions for LGBTQ+ individuals. 🔎 These findings highlight the need for organizations to improve recruitment, retention, and promotion processes to foster greater #LGBTQ+ representation at all levels, including #CorporateBoards. Read the Globe and Mail op-ed (paywalled): https://lnkd.in/gf3D6mSx
🌈 Pride month is fast approaching! 💡 At least 4.4% of the population are LGBTQ+, but only 0.15% of Board Directors on the TSX have publicly identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community. ➡ Check out the latest research by GATE Founding Director, Sarah Kaplan, ICD.D, on the underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ corporate directors in Canada, with thanks for support from LGBTQ Corporate Directors Canada. ⬇ See the infographic for more information on our research. #Pride #LGBTQ+ #Research #CorporateDirectors #TSX

February is LGBTQ+ History month. To mark this occasion, I presented at Sky's weekly Research Team meeting. In this session, I covered: 🌈What LGBTQ+ History month is and why it's important - there are lots of reasons why it's important. 🌈How this month came about. For those who don't know, it was a direct response to Section 28 - a clause with prohibited any mention of queer families & content in local authorities, including schools from 1988-2003. 🌈How we can support the LGBTQ+ community now and always - there are also lots of ways we can support. 🌈Finally, what Sky are doing to celebrate both internally with events and externally with content. As a Sky LGBTQ+ Champ (someone who's in the know and spreads this knowledge) and a Bisexual woman, this month is particularly important to me. #lgbthistorymonth #diversityandinclusion

Can confirm: "Scott’s gifts to LGBTQ organizations have been transformative in what they have allowed organizations to do. Large unrestricted gifts empower LGBTQ organizations to pursue new & significant opportunities that have the potential to broaden the movement’s impact, (especially) in light of the current context LGBTQ communities are facing. When looking at the gap between the scope of gifts given to LGBTQ organizations & gifts given to nonprofit organizations in general, a primary takeaway for funders from Movement Advancement Project (MAP)'s report is: Do not shift your giving away from other types of organizations, but also give more boldly to LGBTQ organizations to close the gap." It is a critical time for bold action!
