THIS THURSDAY: An effective response to homelessness requires permanent housing solutions with enough flexibility and options to meet an entire community’s diverse housing needs. But meeting these needs is a real challenge amid the nationwide housing affordability crisis. Rapid Re-Housing, as a program model, has the potential to be flexible and adaptable at the system, program, and individual levels. In Thursday's webinar—which is part of a roundtable series by the National Alliance to End Homelessness—hear from communities that are harnessing that flexibility to meet the moment and generate innovative and creative housing solutions. Earlier this week, we headed to Lambeth Town Hall with other homelessness organisations and local authority representatives to share our solutions to the housing crisis that’s leaving young people unable to escape homelessness. The current housing system is broken, and our new research sheds a light on how government support simply doesn’t reflect the realities of finding a home if you’re a young person who has experienced homelessness. It’s time to act. Young people need housing security – and they need it now. That means more affordable homes, Local Housing Allowance that actually matches rising rents, and laws that protect vulnerable young people from discrimination by landlords and deal with the scourge of unsafe and unliveable homes. The housing and homelessness crisis in the US is reaching alarming rates with nearly half of all renters paying more than 30% of their income towards rent and utilities, according to a study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. A lack of affordable housing, combined with the end of federal pandemic assistance, has contributed to a 2023 record-high of over 650,000 homeless people across the nation, per the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Our Report for America corps members have been on the ground documenting this rise in homelessness, highlighting the individual scope of the crisis, and revealing new solutions that local communities are experimenting with to address the housing epidemic. To end homelessness, we need more homes. Yet traditional housing models can be costly and time-consuming. The Step Up America model utilizes public-private partnerships to fund motel conversions, creating new permanent supportive housing at half or even a third of the cost and in a third of the time.

Holistic healthcare is spoken about often, but have you considered that this also applies to housing? Or how investment in public housing can not only improve quality of life, but provide opportunities to people and communities? Or the impact on children and young people? Launch has put together a submission to improve housing outcomes for those at risk or experiencing homelessness and actions to take to be part of the change 👏🏻
Ending homelessness starts with building more homes - but it doesn't end there. At Launch Housing, advocating for systemic change is an integral part of what we do. That's why when we submitted recommendations to the National Housing and Homelessness Plan we called for an increased supply of fully funded long-term supportive housing models. Because housing + health + support = permanently ends homelessness. Download and read the complete submission today.
