Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth is a leader among SoCal headquartered firms over the last 5 years in terms of total M&A deal volume and the total number of M&A clients.* This statistical depth of experience doesn't come as too much of a surprise to me as I approach my six month anniversary at Stradling, but it might come as a surprise to attorneys at biglaw shops who are across the table from us. The below data is particularly striking when you consider that the SoCal headquartered firms ahead of us are all global giants with headcounts ranging from around 800 to 3,200 attorneys.** We, on the other hand, are a lean shop of 116 attorneys where our M&A platform focuses on efficient execution of middle market transactions. *Source: PitchBook Data summary of M&A transactions completed by law firms headquartered in Southern California since July 2018. **Source: 2023 NJL 500.

Isolating just the female representation in Partner promotions is a flawed approach when trying to understand if a law firm is on track to reach their DE&I goals. Yes, 38% isn’t top of the class, but without also taking into consideration how Latham perform in retaining their female Partners as well as the ratio of female Partners laterally hired into the firm, it’s very difficult to understand if Latham are in fact on track or not. For example, the most effective area for Latham to focus on in improving their female representation in the Partnership might NOT be in equalising Partner promotions. Instead, RETAINING or HIRING more female Partners than their current rate might be the most impactful areas to focus on in reaching a more gender diverse Partnership quicker. And how can firms know which area is going to be the most impactful one to focus on for their firm? Not only that, what each practice group within the firm should focus on? Data!!!! P.S. Reaching my fifth “work anniversary” with Stradling, I pulled together some data to take stock of our progress in addressing the Southern California marketplace as a M&A team since I returned to private practice from The Gores Group. The relevant comparison is not with the large national firms who happened to be headquartered in LA (not to mention the large offices of out of state or Bay Area firms) but with our peers focusing on this particular market. Key takeaways: ·        Our newest lawyers are getting broad experience, and seeing a variety of businesses as they develop their practices ·        We are efficiently executing middle market transactions, whether rollup strategies or add-ons for PE platforms ·        Our clients are comfortable with Stradling on their side even when the counterparty has spent their cash on global or national firms with their global or national pricing and staffing practices.
