Who would have thought? Kara Kane and I were recognised by Apolitical as two of the ‘Top 35 Government Talent Trailblazers’. I’m grateful for the recognition of our community work, especially as governments aren’t particularly good at recognising the importance of communities of practice and, consequently, funding such work. Over the years in the public sector, we saw community-oriented work coming and going out of fashion again. We had our UCD communities team dissolved in the summer of 2020, which was offering training, organising cross-departmental exchange, and building case studies and maturity frameworks. Since then, we moved around, finding places that provide space for ‘21st Century Skills Mainstreaming and Community Building’, as Apolitical puts it. That’s still no given, and community support faces an ongoing tidal movement. Communities of practice are vital to reducing duplication of work, increasing knowledge transfer, and creating a more effective government that works better for the people. They help overcome silos and stimulate vital critical exchange about quality and impact beyond organisational boundaries. German public servants are lucky to have NExT e. V., which has a growing number of formats. UK civil servants are running the 6th annual #ServicesWeek this week, with hundreds contributing and thousands participating. Still, community work is too often spare-time work. There is little consistent funding for it and appreciation, too. That’s why Apolitical’s list matters – and can maybe even help change things a bit.
