This is great....BUT! I recently hosted the Midday Magic Wellness Summit, helping working moms take midday breaks to find rest and renewal. It was an amazing event with 180 ladies in attendance. The speakers were excellent and brought so much wisdom. The feedback survey brought up an important piece of the puzzle, however. The women see the importance of this and want the MAGIC of a MIDDAY BREAK! But the fear they feel is real. They fear criticism, judgment, or retaliation if they prioritize taking breaks/lunch on a regular basis. They fear getting passed over for promotion due to being seen as someone who isn't serious about the work. The recent 2023 Work in America Survey by the American Psychological Association backs up these professionals' fear in that only 1/3 of the surveyed felt their employer offered a culture where breaks are encouraged. I want to celebrate that 1/3 for recognizing that breaks aren't luxury but fundamental to a healthy workforce. For the other 2/3, let's do better together. I Climbed The Great Wall During my recent 10-day, 5 city tour in China: • I ate 3 meals a day (which I normally don’t) • I ate lots of protein and veggies (which I normally do) • I walked, and walked, and walked, and walked some more, I walked everywhere, in sunshine, in rain... • I didn’t think or have time to snack (which I usually do) • I had the stamina to keep up with some of the “youngons” on the trip which included 20 other women from mid-to-late 50s - to me a few others in our early 70s. And, can I tell you that this 72-year young Seasoned Sister released 3 lbs on this small 5’ frame. Thats BIG/HUGE for me! What I Learned: * To continue to eat lots protein and veggies * That I don’t need the 3 meals per day though * To continue to move everyday, focusing on strength & stamina, so I can continue to do all the things that bring me joy * I don’t need the snacks that really have been slowing me down It took a few days for me to internalize the learnings and go about putting them into action in my daily life and NORMALIZING them. That’s what a healthy lifestyle looks like for all of us That is what a healthly lifestyle can look like for your employees. Traveling is an important part of joy in my life and I want to stay healthy, active and independent so that I can continue to experience all joy that traveling gives me. I bet many of your employees feel the same way; they work hard and plan for vacations to new places during their PTO. You can't have a culture of engagement without clear messaging that your organization is truly "putting the people first". Implementing the use of an OOO that promotes and even encourages time off is an excellent (and simple) way to spread this message and further build a culture of engagement and wellbeing.
