In our latest report for CSA Group, we identify three elements critical for a circular built environment: 1️⃣ adaptive reuse of existing buildings; 2️⃣ adaptive design of new buildings; and 3️⃣ material reuse. The figure below illustrates the relationships among the three elements and how they reinforce one another and disrupt the typical progression of demolishing existing buildings and landfilling their materials. What does traditional craft have to do with the environment? We believe that traditional craft made from natural indigenous materials is a meaningful example of circular design, and that it can have positive impacts on several environmental levels: it contributes to healthier living spaces for ourselves, its production is safer for the people working with those materials, and its fabrication is less harmful to the natural environment. Really looking forward to taking part in this roundable on Monday, and exploring what the new government might mean for the future of sustainable housing. Should be an interesting discussion. #housing #planning #sustainablehousing #labour #newgovernment
We are thrilled to introduce some of the industry experts who will be joining us at our roundtable this Monday at the Northern Sustainability Summit. Aaron Robertson, Researcher for Housebuilding Innovations in Volume, Environment and Efficiency at the The University of Salford, Anna Relph, Director at Turley and Peter Bartley, Head of Sustainability at AEW Architects. These industry experts have extensive experience across the property, energy, sustainability and architecture space and we are delighted to have them involved in our discussion around the impact the new government will have on sustainable housing 🏠

Congratulations to mindful MATERIALS on a successful alignment of the The Common Materials Framework (CMF) with major standards & organizations! The CMF is the outcome of the most detailed cross-stakeholder industry effort to date to analyze and organize over 100 of the most common building product and material certifications and disclosures. The CMF gives structure to over 650 relevant sustainability factors identified within these programs. Those factors are organized within the five buckets of health and sustainability referenced across multiple stakeholder materials pledges, including the AIA A&D Materials Pledge, ILFI, IWBI and USGBC programs. By mapping the underlying data and organization of those Pledge statements, the CMF allows signatories of those pledges to navigate and demonstrate achievement on their public commitments. We at Brightworks Sustainability are pleased to have contributed to the CMF’s development as contracted staff to mindfulMaterials through the leadership of our brilliant Jack Dinning and Jeffery Frost. #harmonization #healthandwellness #materialinnovation #circularity #carbonreduction #leadership
In an unprecedented collaboration of leading organizations dedicated to sustainable building practices and impact reduction in the built environment, The American Institute of Architects (AIA), the International Living Future Institute, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the U.S. Green Building Council, and mindful MATERIALS have joined forces to align around the Common Materials Framework, which establishes for the first time a common language for holistic material sustainability in the building industry. I am really looking forward to this lecture. It’s an honor to have Jonathan Natanian with us. Here is the complete abstract: Beyond Green Buildings: on holistic environmental performance design Imagine a future where our built environments contribute positively to our planet. Our goal is ambitious: achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050 and limit global warming to just 1.5°C. But how can the field of architecture drive us toward this sustainable future? This lecture explores the pivotal role of architectural design in this quest. Historically, architects used intuitive methods that harmonized with the environment. Some experts argue that reviving these traditional practices is crucial, but is that sufficient for modern challenges? Alternatively, a growing number champion the use of advanced digital tools that integrate environmental performance data directly into the design process. However, transitioning to a fully digitized workflow raises questions about what might be overlooked or lost. This lecture from the Environmental Performance Design Lab delves into the evolution from traditional to computational design methodologies. We will explore how these approaches are not just about enhancing efficiency but about deepening our understanding and implementation of sustainable practices. By bridging historical insights with cutting-edge technologies, we aim to demonstrate how modern architecture can effectively contribute to environmental sustainability.
Online-Lecture in english with Jonathan Natanian on: Beyond Green Buildings: on Holistic Environmental Performance Design Workflows - German title: Jenseits grüner Gebäude: Ganzheitliche ökologische Gestaltung. Date & time: 28.05.2024, 18:00 (MESZ) Registration: bonn@digev.de Jacob Estevam Schmiedt Environmental Performance and Design Lab (EPDL)
