Is 25GbE Network a viable alternative for 32G Fiber Channel when building a Storage Area Network in 2023 ? We have tested it using IBM's NVMe Flashsystem 5200 with FlashCore Modules and 2 x MikroTik CRS518-16XS-2XQ and our conclusion is a BIG yes! The challenge with Fiberchannel is strict vendorlockin on 32G platform and newer which has caused the price to increase accordingly. Furthermore customers are left without aftermarket options or self support as firmware and even transceivers are locked to a single switch. Advantages: - Super cost effective solution - 16 available in each switch ports allows for up-to medium sized SAN environments. (e.g.: 10 hosts and 2 storage systems) - Excellent fault tolerance with two separate switches, each with dual PSU - Free switch firmware -100G Uplinks for scalability - IBM's FlashSystem 5200 is a very fast storage system, but still in the entry level price segment. At Plan B we have supported 10GbE block storage on IBM Storwizes for several years and we are now ready to support 25GbE thus making an affordable storage platform viable for a lot company sizes.

Cyber Security Consultant focusing on F5 Networks products like BIG-IP/BIG-IQ/BIG-IP NEXT/XC Distributed Cloud WAAP/Shape/Nginx (F5 Devcentral MVP) and with a knowledge in Palo Alto and many other IT Vendors
The F5 rSeries and Velos (F5OS) are very interesting platforms that utilize Kubevirt to run the classical F5 BIG-IP as a virtual machine but managed as a kubernetes pod by the kubernetes orchestration. https://kubevirt.io/ For BIG-IP Next as it is already based on kubernetes, so it is natively integrated in the F5OS platform 😉 Many people probably also wonder how to investigate issues for example with LACP with F5OS it is really easy as you can enable debug logging for LACP under the rSeries GUI or the Velos Partition GUI under "SYSTEM SETTINGS Log Settings " and then the rSeries appliance log or the partition Velos logs can be checked. An old Devcentral article that I made long ago, when I was dealing more with F5OS: https://lnkd.in/dP6etxdv It is interesting to know that some rSeries Platforms like r4000 and r2000 use SR-IOV to connect the Tenant Virtual Machines to the real physical network while r5000 and r10000 appliances use FPGA. Also somethings like hardware vWire is supported only on rSeries r5000 and r10000 appliances not Velos Blade Chassis or lower end rSeries but the same was true for smaller models iSeries appliance and VIPRION Blade Chassis that Velos and rSeries is replacing.
