It’s the best

The reason I was inspired to join Atlassian in the first place was the idea that there was a better, more balanced, more productive way to collaborate and team — one that did not depend on rigid, full-time co-location to be successful. While we (nor anyone) have all the right answers to what makes teamwork “work” — and while those right answers will be different depending on your team — I remain inspired by the Atlassians that are intentionally and intensely curious about seeking them out. Here’s what we’ve learned so far as Team Anywhere.

Start the new year with some fun activities for your team, this will help the team ease into the work before crushing those huge milestones. For a high-performing remote team, it's essential to foster continuous bonding. Activities that connect the team are a great kick-off. It's like starting a car, you accelerate gradually from rest. In addition, the team feels welcome and you set the atmosphere for great work and productivity. Treat people like humans and watch them deliver. There's three things I'm grateful for when I look at this picture that was posted to Nectar's slack a few days ago: 1. The breadth of what I get to work on as a designer at a startup. I only helped get this booth over the line towards the end of the process (credit to Mason Utley for doing 99% of the design work), but it's fulfilling have physical products I've designed out in the world. Coming from a software engineering background, I was never formally trained on print production and didn't expect to deal with it much. It's been fun and refreshing to figure out! 2. The quality of people I get to work with. Nectar has grown a lot in the two years that I’ve been here, and even as a remote employee and with limited in-person interactions, I know we’ve got a solid team. Probably because I see how often people are succeeding in their own spheres from all the shoutouts in our Nectar feed 😉. We’ve got a solid mission–help people feel more valued and appreciated at work–and core values that people fully lean into. We’re driven, and we’re fun 😄. 3. How hard everyone cheers each other on. Our slack’s been blowing up with all the hype and energy for this SHRM conference. Especially at a startup, every win is a big win, and gets celebrated accordingly. Congratulations on all the hard work and a successful conference team!

Atlassian is one of the largest companies in the world committed to a fully distributed workforce (no hybrid or return-to-office mandates here!). It has major challenges, but you can't argue with the results. 40% of Atlassians live 2+ hours from an office. 91% of staff say it's a reason they remain at Atlassian. We save 10 working days of commute time per employee per year. On a personal level, I have been able to hire incredible people for our team that would not have joined Atlassian if we didn't offer distributed work. It's a difficult problem, but I would rather work for an ambitious company than a timid one. Get our full report:
