Gone are the days when employee wellbeing could be 'done' with a tick in a box. There has to be a paradigm shift in how we talk about colleague wellbeing, and how we support them in that. And no, I'm NOT voting to go so far down the support route, that actually you can't run a profitable business. There needs to be balance. But understanding that balance, and how to measure wellbeing correctly, is the key to a motivated and engaged workforce. Ironically, the most common benefit employers change first to address these issues, is pay. Unfortunately (and sometimes, despite what the colleagues might say/think) - this is often the thing with the least REAL impact on their wellbeing at work/home. It's certainly part of the picture, but it's not the silver bullet many think it is. The most recent Sounthern Cross workplace welllness report (2023) indicates a surprising rise in absenteeism costs which represent an average of 5.5 days per employee. This cost businesses $2.86bn, up from $1.85bn just two years earlier. Despite the improvement in companies embracing wellbeing programmes we are not turning the tide on these statistics.
