A nationwide real estate company informed its agents one year ago that it was increasing its agent transaction fees. The company guaranteed that there wouldn’t be another fee increase for at least two more years. Earlier this month, they broke that promise hiking fees yet again, a year earlier than they said they would. Instead of directly addressing their contradiction, however, the company chose to ignore it (a decision I would have advised against had they been my client). A friend of mine is one of their agents. Her expressed frustrations are exactly what I would expect from this situation- disbelief, anger, and distrust. "Isn't integrity one of their core values?!" she said as she searched their website for confirmation. The fee itself wasn't the issue; it was the failure to acknowledge the broken promise that eroded my friend's trust in her company's leadership. Something that I'm sure had a similar effect on the thousands of other realtors employed by the company. I decided to dive into the literature on trust and leadership.
