Leaders take a risk when they define their culture or values and paste it up on the walls. While trying to get our people to change their behaviour, we invite them to point out every instance in which we don't live up to those aspirations. As my colleague Khoi Tu once said to one of our clients, 'You challenge your people to get better all the time… you shouldn't be surprised when they turn around and do the same to you.' Erin Meyer's recent article provides great guidance on how to define a culture in a way that makes it concrete and actionable - only by doing this do we stand a chance of people living that culture. But this also makes it easy for people point out when we fall short. Being a perfect role model of the target culture is a good way round this, but probably not realistic for us humans. Great article! Company culture is not a static backdrop but a dynamic force that can and should drive strategy. When a company’s culture aligns with its strategic goals, it creates a powerful synergy that propels the organization forward. A strong, positive culture fosters employee engagement, innovation, and resilience, all of which are critical for executing strategic initiatives effectively. Discussing culture is one of my favorite parts of teaching management at Else School of Management at Millsaps College!

Business Strategist⎮International Publishing and Licensing⎮M&As⎮Integration and Structuring⎮Strategic Planning
"If you want your culture to take root, leadership must be the first to model it."– Erin Meyer In her Harvard Business Review article, Professor Erin Meyer, the author of The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business, discusses essential strategies for building a corporate culture that truly influences employee behavior and decision-making. Meyer argues that abstract values like "integrity" or "respect" are insufficient to guide daily actions. Instead, companies should base their cultures on real-world dilemmas employees face, providing clear directives for these situations. She emphasizes the importance of moving from broad principles to actionable guidelines, using vivid and concrete examples to make cultural values memorable. Additionally, Meyer highlights the need for hiring practices that align with the desired culture, ensuring new hires embody the company's values. She also stresses that culture should drive strategy, with employees' decisions supporting the organization's strategic goals. Finally, Meyer advises flexibility, recognizing that there are limits to cultural principles and situations where adjustments are necessary. These strategies collectively help create a robust and actionable corporate culture. #CorporateCulture #Leadership #BusinessStrategy #HBR #Management #OrganizationalDevelopment
