We all feel the impact of rising food costs, but seniors on a fixed income get hit the hardest. The Los Angeles Daily News covered our partnership with LA City's Rapid Response Senior Meal program. The Rev senior meal operation is serving over 100,000 meals per month and growing. As a community, we can ensure that seniors who are quietly aging in place, aren't overlooked. https://lnkd.in/eWbkRVbS #ladailynews #seniormeals #losangeles

Hunger doesn't take a summer vacation.... โ 13.4 million children lived in households that experienced food insecurity in 2022, up 44.6% from 2021, with higher rates in the southern region of the US. Yet 14 states have rejected federal dollars that would give low-income families a $40-per-child monthly benefit to cover groceries and food from farmersโ markets - only - when schools close for the summer. Those states are : Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont and Wyoming. As a South Carolinian, I'm beyond frustrated at this decision! Reasons for opting out is grounded in reasons that are far from substantial. For example: ๐ Wyoming Superintendent Megan Degenfelder argues the summer meal program is sufficient - when in fact, it reaches only one of every nine children, with some counties having no options at all. ๐ Iowaโs Gov. Kim Reynolds said โAn EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic,โ when, science shows, childhood obesity and malnutrition are two sides of the same coin, with food insecurity as the root cause. There is no excuse for children in this country to go hungry when solutions exist. Urge your state - and others - to participate in Summer EBT. Hungry children can't wait. #summer #nutrition #obesity https://lnkd.in/e4eg7RZP

๐ Resource Highlight: Meals on Wheels! ๐ฅช๐๐ ๏ธKeeping Seniors Nourished and Connected SilverLink is proud to highlight Meals on Wheels, a vital program that goes beyond just delivering food. It's a lifeline for many seniors in our community. Meals on Wheels ensures seniors have access to nutritious meals, promoting their health and well-being. But the benefits extend far beyond the plate. Friendly volunteers who deliver the meals often provide a much-needed social connection for homebound seniors, combating feelings of isolation and loneliness. This human connection can be just as vital as the food itself, allowing seniors to feel supported and valued. Ultimately, Meals on Wheels empowers seniors to maintain their independence and age comfortably in their own homes. It's a program that nourishes bodies and nurtures spirits. Elder care remains a pressing issue nationally and globally, with recent data painting a concerning picture. In 2021, four out of five seniors in need of meal assistance went without, while 3.6 million low-income older adults faced food insecurity, marking 18% of this demographic. These statistics emphasize the critical need for increased support and resources for our elderly population. The challenges are significant, and solutions are not readily apparent. #ElderCare #SeniorSupport #CommunityAssistance

Why America Is Failing To Feed Its Aging 12 MINUTE READ When Army veteran Eugene Milligan fell off a charityโs rolls for home-delivered Meals on Wheels because of a long stay in the hospital last winter, he had to rely on others such as his son, a local church and a generous off-duty nurse to bring him food.Andrea Morales for Kaiser Health BY LAURA UNGAR & TRUDY LIEBERMAN / KAISER HEALTH NEWS AUGUST 28, 2019 8:00 AM EDT A rmy veteran Eugene Milligan is 75 years old and blind. He uses a wheelchair since losing half his right leg to diabetes and gets dialysis for kidney failure. And he has struggled to get enough to eat. Hereโs Why play_arrow skip_next volume_off fullscreen Earlier this year, he ended up in the hospital after burning himself while boiling water for oatmeal. The long stay caused the Memphis vet to fall off a charityโs rolls for home-delivered Meals on Wheels, so he had to rely on others, such as his son, a generous off-duty nurse and a local church to bring him food. โMany times, Iโve felt like I was starving,โ he says. โThereโs neighbors that need food too. Thereโs people at dialysis that need food. Thereโs hunger everywhere.โ PAID CONTENT Market Trends with New York Stock Exchange President, Lynn Martin BY NYSE Indeed, millions of seniors across the country quietly go hungry as the safety net designed to catch them frays. Nearly 8% of Americans 60 and older were โfood insecureโ in 2017, according to a recent study released by the anti-hunger group Feeding America. Thatโs 5.5 million seniors who donโt have consistent access to enough food for a healthy life, a number that has more than doubled since 2001 and is only expected to grow as America grays. While the plight of hungry children elicits support and can be tackled in schools, the plight of hungry older Americans is shrouded by isolation and a generationโs pride. The problem is most acute in parts of the South and Southwest. Louisiana has the highest rate among states, with 12% of seniors facing food insecurity. Memphis fares worst among major metropolitan areas, with 17% of seniors like Milligan unsure of their next meal.
