Paraeducator for SDUSD | Inspired Teaching and Learning | Student at National University | Passionate about Higher Education
The ADA applies to nearly all public and private schools, except for some religious schools. Schools can’t discriminate. They must ensure accessibility to the curriculum and they must offer reasonable accommodations. But the ADA isn’t the only law that gives rights and protections to students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) covers all grade school students. Literacy skills open many possibilities which is why it’s important to make curriculum accessible to all students. Direct instruction appears the most effective approach for improving word recognition skills in students with learning disabilities. Direct instruction refers to teaching skills in an explicit, direct fashion. It involves drill/repetition/practice and can be delivered to one child or to a small group of students at the same time. This post also reminds me that it's important to include diversity in the books we share with our students. Books can be mirrors, doors, windows.
Today is National Disability Independence Day. Annually this day commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) in 1990. Reading Is Fundamental is proud to share our Disability Pride Book Collection available on Literacy Central. This unique collection of books features people and characters with differing abilities to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disabled community.
