Associate Vice President of School and Community Initiatives at Child Health and Development Institute of Connecticut (CHDI)
Check out our latest policy brief on solutions for sustainable crisis and acute behavioral health services for children and youth--a small investment by all can generate a major impact for those needing it most.
Connecticut has been establishing a continuum of community-based behavioral health crisis services for children and youth, including the 988 Lifeline (211 locally), Mobile Crisis Intervention Services, and Urgent Crisis Centers for youth. Unfortunately, many of these services are supported by short-term funds that will expire soon without further action. Our latest Policy Brief identifies ways Connecticut can sustainably support 988, Mobile Crisis, and Urgent Crisis Centers through small surcharges on wireless plans, similar to how 911 emergency services are funded. This approach is already being used in many other states. ➡️Read the brief here: https://ow.ly/LCul50R1HU1 This Policy Brief was authored by Jeffrey Vanderploeg, Ph.D (President & CEO, CHDI) and Gary M. Steck, LMFT (CEO, Wellmore Behavioral Health). #CrisisServices #988 #ChildrensMentalHealth #CTPolicy #CTLeg

Join the conversation on mental health advocacy! 🌟 Let's work together to ensure all Vermonters have access to the quality care they deserve. #APAAdvocacy #MentalHealthMatters
What an incredible day on Capitol Hill! Today, I had the honor of representing Vermont and the Vermont Psychological Association as the Federal Advocacy Coordinator for the American Psychological Association. I met with the office of Senator Peter Welch and discussed critical mental health issues with Legislative Correspondent Jahnessa Ryea, a proud Swanton, Vermont native. During our meeting, we focused on several key topics: The need for continued flexibility in the delivery of telemental health services to ensure accessible care for all Vermonters. The importance of allowing psychologists to practice independently under Medicare, which will significantly improve access to necessary mental health services. The benefits of integrating mental and behavioral health specialists into team-based primary care, promoting a comprehensive approach to patient care. It was a privilege to engage in meaningful dialogue with Ms. Ryea, who understands the unique challenges faced by our state's communities, particularly the disabled and aging populations. I'm deeply grateful for this opportunity to advocate for policies that will positively impact the mental health and well-being of all Vermonters. #APAAdvocacy #MentalHealthMatters #ProudToRepresentVT

Learn about The Evolving Needs of Youth and Families Receiving Public Behavioral Health Care amidst the Behavioral Health Crisis presented by New Jersey Department of Children and Families Mollie Greene, MA, CADC, Assistant Commissioner, Children’s System of Care and Diana Salvador, PsyD, Clinical Director at #NJAMHAA2024SpringConference on April 10, 2024. The New Jersey Children's System of Care in the Department of Children and Families is the public behavioral health system for youth, young adults and their families, and has provided a robust continuum of prevention services, treatment and support for youth, young adults, and families for more than 20 years. Challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, behavioral health crisis and national staffing shortage have given rise to unprecedented difficulties in meeting the needs of youth and their families. This presentation will highlight trends in needs and utilization, pre- and post-pandemic, for individuals engaged in the public healthcare system. The presenters will examine the gaps and opportunities to refine and enhance services and supports. At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: ➡Define services and supports offered to youth and families through the New Jersey Children's System of Care. ➡Describe trends and evolving needs of youth and families accessing services in the New Jersey Children's System of Care. ➡Explain current needs of high-risk youth and families in New Jersey to guide individual and system prevention and intervention efforts. “For New Yorkers who have some of the most complex health and social needs, a range of personalized care options is needed to achieve long-term stability,” said Tracy Perrizo, New York City Program Officer. Helmsley is working with organizations across the city’s healthcare ecosystem to ensure New Yorkers with complex health needs have access to the care they require. This includes a three-year pilot program – funded by a $2.3M Helmsley grant – with the INSTITUTE FOR COMMUNITY LIVING, INC that will design, implement, and evaluate a step-down model for individuals who would benefit from mental health support but no longer require an intensive model of care. We are also working with New Destiny Housing Corporation to improve housing and health stability for domestic violence survivors and their families. These are just a few of the projects we have undertaken to prioritize access to #mentalhealth resources for New Yorkers. Public health advocate. Passionate about maternal health, mental health, and healthcare equity. Let's bridge the gaps together!
Witnessing the recent incident where two police officers were caught beating a 16-year-old is deeply troubling. This event underscores the urgent need to address disparities in how different communities are treated by law enforcement. As someone with a background in public health and mental health advocacy, I understand that such traumatic experiences can have long-lasting impacts on the mental well-being of young individuals and communities. The trauma from such encounters can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and mistrust in authorities, which perpetuates a cycle of fear and inequality. We need to advocate for comprehensive mental health support for those affected by these traumatic events and push for systemic changes that address the root causes of these disparities. By raising awareness and promoting policies that ensure equitable treatment, we can work towards a future where all individuals, regardless of their background, feel safe and supported. In public health, it’s crucial to address these systemic issues head-on. Let’s continue to work together to promote justice, mental well-being, and equity for all. https://lnkd.in/gMZJUg_e
